Not quite an ''Onehunderdandeiiiiiiighty!'', but fun nonetheless.

Darts Up 3D was a title that recently got a price drop in Europe, which made me curious to pick it up and give it a shot. What makes the game stand out, is that you use the Nintendo 3DS's gyroscope to aim at the dartboard. This might sound silly, but it duplicates the feeling of darts fairly well. Throwing the dart, however, is simple, and is done by pulling back on the Circle Pad.

While the game is fairly entertaining, there are a few hiccups along the way. When the motion controls go out of sync, there is no quick way of putting the aim back at the right spot. You are usually stuck aiming from an off angle for a single round until it can reset. Another thing is the presentation, which isn't very attractive. You’re constantly looking at the same dartboard over and over. There is a 3D effect, but there isn't any real use for it considering you move the system so much. For the musical score, there are a few variations but they all share the same repetitive melody.

As a fun distraction though, Darts Up 3D certainly isn't as bad as you might think. There is Classic, where you can play between two and four players, sharing the same system. You try to score the most points possible. In Arcade, you play multiple rounds as try to beat your own personal highscore. Finally, you have X01, in which players try to get to zero in the quickest ways possible. You can even apply real game rules to make the game trickier. A nice touch is that you can send the full game to a friend over download play, so that multiple groups of friends can hop into the fun of darts.

Darts Up 3D might not be a full featured game, but it is a nice bite sized game for parties. The motion controls are smooth for the most part. The presentation is lacking, as it is mostly filled with the same components over and over again. The variety of game types and the inclusion of download play are nice touches however; so if you like darts, there is nothing wrong with picking this one up.

Summary

Pros
  • Fun small multiplayer game
  • Inclusion of download play
  • Surprisingly good motion controls
Cons
  • Calibrating is not easy to do
  • Repetitive presentation
