Do you like coasters? Seriously, do you like them?

Frontier Developments, well known for games such as LostWinds, have returned to Nintendo systems as they bring their smash hit Coaster Crazy Deluxe to the Wii U. The game starts its life as a mobile iOS release, so the slippery slope of porting now comes under discussion. With this concern in mind and a love for coasters at the ready, I looked into the world of Frontier's latest child.

Coaster Crazy Deluxe puts coaster creation in the forefront. In the regular course of the game, you are presented with various locations around the globe and here you will have to to purchase spots to unlock challenges. At these locations, three characters named the Crazies will give you three objectives to shoot for and then it is up to you to make an award winning coaster. Sometimes you will be required to simply complete a coaster or freshen up a layout, while at others you have the total freedom to go wild with it. While the gameplay elements seem basic, the objectives make you always think about the elements in fresh new ways.

As you clear objectives, you will earn various new items for coasters as well as experience points to unlock more content. This content will still have to be purchased with cash you earned during those same challenges, but the game has a nice progression. All of these elements can be used in a sandbox mode, where you can go wild and can create whatever your heart desires. Your creations can be shared with friends and it proves to be quite a good time, for the most part.

The trick with the game is that you need to think about the speed, gravity and curves that you make. If that doesn't sound exciting to you, you may not find a lot to love. The game requires a lot of fiddling around and testing out concepts to see what works. You can constantly test your coasters with a neat cockpit view, where you use the gyroscope of the Wii U GamePad to look around. It is fun, but certainly requires specific tastes!

One major thing it has certainly against it is that the game feels unnecessary on a television. It was originally built for tablets in mind and that certainly shows. You will always be looking down at the smaller screen of the Wii U GamePad, where you use the buttons or the stylus to change things around with your coaster. It works, but you are missing a nicer view on things. Another thing is that the game lacks any sort of audio on the Wii U GamePad, which makes that you need to have a TV as back-up for audio queues. It is extremely annoying and I really hope that Frontier fixes this issue in an update.

Coaster Crazy Deluxe is a nice roller coaster building simulator for whoever wants to give it a fair shake. It requires players who love fiddling around with options. The problem is that it is not really built with a television in mind and should just be played on the Wii U GamePad instead. If you don't have a tablet and you’re searching for the next best way to experience the game, then this does prove to be a crazy time.

Summary

Pros
  • Fun way to create coasters
  • Nice progression curve
  • Plenty of interesting challenges
Cons
  • GamePad isn't quite like a tablet
  • Unneeded on a television
  • Very niche appeal
