Beyond Good & Evil

by Jeff Shirley - September 18, 2003, 1:09 am EDT

In this game, you conspire to perspire over the events that transpire.

From the mind of Michel Ancel, the creator of Rayman, comes Beyond Good and Evil. The game stars a young reporter/photographer named Jade who has set out to free her home world, Hyllis, from an evil conspiracy. An alien race attacks Hyllis and after the planet is “saved”, the government assures everybody that the aliens are gone. But we know better, don’t we?

The game itself is a third-person action adventure title. Players control Jade as she navigates the depths of this conspiracy on foot or by various vehicles found along the way. An added aspect of the game is that Jade will have to use her talents as a photographer to earn money to fund her conspiracy-busting plans. Various citizens of her home world will ask her to photograph something, and the higher quality snapshots will gleam more rewards for Jade. Also, mini-games, including air hockey and boat racing, will earn extra cash for the movement. However, Jade will be prompted to stop lollygagging and continue the game by emails and audio cues given within the game.

The character models have changed since E3, with Jade getting a more edgy look. Ubi Soft asserts that she is not the only character being re-rendered. Uncle Pey’j (who is a pig, don’t ask) will change from his unitard-like look from the E3 demo to something taken from a Bruce Willis movie. A “wife beater” t-shirt, tattoos, and sprouting chest hair (on a pig?) are some of the changes to expect.

Beyond Good and Evil is one to watch for GameCube. From the creator of Rayman, you can bet this title will be, if anything, very unique.
