Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour

by Michael Cole - July 23, 2003, 12:42 am EDT

Mama mia! Mario and Wario match play on the GameCube? "One, two, three, FORE!"

Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour's E3 demo, documentation, and official website have revealed many details on the final version of Mario's new golf game for the GameCube. On July 28th GameCube owners can hit the links with the Mario Bros., Peach, Daisy, Koopa Troopa, Wario, Waluigi, DK, Diddy Kong, Yoshi, Bowser, and many more familiar faces!

In an attempt to appeal to both golf gurus and Mario fans, MG:TT features two types of courses. Conventional courses present a (more or less) realistic course design along the lines of the N64 game’s earlier courses, with obstacles and hazards one would find at any golf course. These are designed to provide a fun round of traditional golf with that extra Mario style. More interesting, however, are Toadstool Tour’s unique courses set in the Mushroom Kingdom. Nintendo fans will not want to miss out on these treasures! The holes available at E3 prominently featured giant warp pipes (which transport balls!), Chain Chomps, and oversized mushrooms to block, snare, and hinder your ball, respectively. Nintendo has disclosed that other unnatural menaces sure to bring a smile will make an appearance in these bizarre and challenging holes, such as the ever-popular Thwomps and even lava pits! Beware, though: the increased zaniness found in these Mushroom Kingdom courses comes at the price of your scorecard!

While analog swing control is increasingly becoming the trend in modern golf games, Camelot has stuck to the same tried-and-true 3-tap approach found in its N64 game and numerous other classics. While essentially the same, the presentation has been slightly altered to focus more heavily on the follow-through and the game’s mechanics reflect this. Beginners can rely on the computer to take care of the swing’s details in automatic mode, while experienced gamers will want to master the games precise timing for the perfect shot in any situation.

Mario Golf will have all the trimmings expected from a serious golf title, such as contact point control, ball lie, elevation change, and wind. Other elements are borrowed from the N64 edition as well. Players can still taunt and compliment their competition, and after each hole, characters will respond to their score with an amusing animation. Also making a return, is the oft-ignored character transfer system, where players can use their home-grown golfer from the upcoming Mario Golf: Advance Tour on the GameCube. Mostly ignored on the GBC and N64 due to a rare and poorly-supported adapter, this feature should get a good deal more use with the standardized GC-GBA cable. Toadstool Tour even includes crazy new modes of play, such as Coin Attack, where you must collect as many coins with your ball as possible!

Camelot has a long list of golf games under its belt, and it certainly hasn’t run out of steam yet! Whether practicing alone or heading out as part of a foursome, Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour should be well worth the greens fee.
