“Sonic meets Mario Galaxy meets Marble Madness meets Super Monkey Ball.” That’s what the director of Armillo, an upcoming Wii U eShop title from Fuzzy Wuzzy Games, says the game is like. And from what I’ve played, he’s not really too far off the mark.

The demo involves rolling around as our titular hero on various planets, which is where the Super Mario Galaxy comparisons become apparent, saving little blue creatures. As you come across these creatures they’ll start talking to you, explaining the current situation and what you should be doing next. The story of the game will be told through these interactions, according to the game’s director.

The Monkey Ball and Marble Madness influences come into play by needing to maintain your momentum so you don’t run into enemies or other hazards. Controlling Armillo is a bit unwieldy at first, but after a few minutes of playing, I managed to get the hang of it. You attack by doing a spin-dash attack, similar to Sonic the Hedgehog games or Dillon’s Rolling Western. It’s extremely satisfying to rush right into a groups of enemies one after another, but it was a bit tough to get the attack to execute every time I attempted it. Once you complete a level, you’re treated to a bonus stage where you collect a bunch of blue orbs, and depending on how well you did during the level, you receive more time to complete it.

It’s not exactly the prettiest game in the world, but it definitely oozes style and charm. I can’t wait to see more of it Armillo when it comes out later this year.
