Feeling artistic? Your original logo design for The Movies could end up in the final game.

TALENTED ART DIRECTOR WANTED! ACTIVISION INC. AND LIONHEAD STUDIOS LAUNCH ONLINE CONTEST FOR THE MOVIES

Santa Monica, CA, September 23, 2004 – So you want to be in pictures? Activision, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATVI) and Lionhead Studios are hosting an online contest where fame is the ultimate prize. Fans of the forthcoming game The Movies™ are invited to design their own studio logo. The winning logos will appear in the game for use on the studio entry gates, throughout the back lot, during opening film credits, and the designer will receive acknowledgment in the game.

Fans who are interested in participating in this contest can view the official rules and submit up to five entries at:

www.themoviesgame.com/logocompetition.html. The images submitted must be a square image, 256 by 256 pixels in size, preferably on a transparent background, and be in one of these formats: tga, tiff, png, gif. Fans are encouraged to create an original piece of art that doesn’t contain names or text and does not refer to products or trademarks.

The Movies logo competition begins on September 20 and ends on October 20. The production team at Lionhead Studios will judge all entries and pick the top three logos for use in the game. The winners and their designs will be announced on November 30 at www.themoviesgame.com.

In The Movies, the studio logo is an important game element as it appears on crew clothing, the water tower, flags, and most importantly, the credits for every film created.

Developed by Lionhead Studios’ Peter Molyneux, a pioneer in the “life simulation” genre, The Movies lets gamers become Hollywood players by creating unique movies and releasing them from the studios they build, starring the actors they discover and develop. Players create and design their own studio lot from which they select scripts, dress sets, choose costumes, determine the intensity of the action, dub voice-overs, score music, and write their own subtitles to create movie masterpieces that they can share online with friends. Gamers can become movie moguls who discover stars, managing their fame from young unknowns to through the twilight of their careers, or let focus on directing movies from their favorite time periods. The Movies has not yet been rated by the ESRB.

Interesting, more companies should do this... for boxarts.

"Interesting, more companies should do this... for boxarts."

But then we would get something different then the main character taking 80% of the package striking an intimidating pose.

Mario Sunshine was quite intimidating.

Well, Mario Party 4 had the entire Mario crew in a circle, kicking you in the face (OK, so Mario was the biggest aggressor, but still)

Though I think Ian's being sarcastic but I accually like box art like that. Though I usually prefer the main character taking 40-60% of the box.

Know why they're doing this? Because they don't have anyone talented enough on their team, probably.

Electronic Arts had virtually the same thing for NFSUG2, where you design your own vinyls for cars. It's awesome to see gamers get the chance to have direct input into games like this, I'd like to see more of it in the future (when done well like these two examples). It also generates more buzz about the game among people, especially those who enter the contest. I imagine some people will duke it out with their friends trying to design the best vinyls & logos, and flexing their brain's to come up with new ideas and foster creativity. On top of that they virtually guarantee sales among the creators, those who didn't make the cut (to see what did ), and the friends of those who did make the cut.

Of course if they gave us an interesting name to work with we might be able to come up with something interesting.
After endless seconds of imagination I came up with this.

Notice that it's in all lowercase? That's cool these days, as are little lines. Also the stars symbolise that there might be star actors in movies.

RABicle: You're supposed to come up with studio names and matching logos for the game, not a logo for the game.

joeamisSeptember 25, 2004

I thought it was just art for a studio's logo, no names or text for the studio. It says, "Fans are encouraged to create an original piece of art that doesn’t contain names or text and does not refer to products or trademarks."

In addition to The Movies and NFSUG2 fan art creation input into their games, I forgot that MGS3: SE also had a contest earlier this summer where they had fans create camaflouge clothing and the winners will have it implemented into the game. (Don't worry there were strict requirements for the type of camaflouge needed lol, you won't see something ridiculously out of place lol).

RABicleSeptember 27, 2004

Oh i get it now. Hey actually that isn't a bad idea. Prehaps I will think about this more.
