Three ways to get your old school Zelda fix.

GameInformer.com is reporting that the Zelda Bonus Disc will be seeing a release in the US this holiday season. There will be three ways to obtain this golden beauty.

First, there will be a special GameCube Zelda bundle available beginning November 17th that will include the disc. Second, the disc will be offered as a bonus for subscribing to Nintendo Power. Finally, customers who buy two upcoming first party Nintendo titles and register them online will be able to receive the bonus disc. The list of first party titles that count towards the offer includes: Mario Kart: Double Dash, Mario Party 5, Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, and 1080˚ Avalanche.

We’ll have more on this offer as it develops.

UPDATE: The contents of the disc have been revealed, and it's more than just games. Here's the rundown on what's on it:

  • The Legend of Zelda (NES)

  • Zelda II: Adventure of Link (NES)

  • The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (N64)

  • The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask (N64)

  • The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker demo (GCN)

  • Video of gameplay highlights from The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker

  • A short retrospective history of The Legend of Zelda series

There is also more information on how to obtain the disc. For the Nintendo Power deal, the disc is available to those who either start new subscriptions or renew current ones. This can be done at Nintendo Power's website. There will also be a website up soon where games can be registered to obtain the disc. A My Nintendo account will be required to get the disc. You can register one on Nintendo's website.

You gonna tell us what they are!? ;______;

(edit: Ah, you fixed it face-icon-small-smile.gif )

Looks like I'm going with numero 3 ^_^

CaseyRybackNovember 04, 2003

I will most likely go number 2 as long as they give it to me with a free players guide as well(also they better give it to resubscribers), if not I will go number 3(also if its faster)

vuduNovember 04, 2003

good thing i was planning on picking up mario kart and mario & luigi anyway.

also, bill, you really should just link to gameinformer, rather than copy and paste.

PaleMike Gamin, Contributing EditorNovember 04, 2003

When they say "subscribe to nintendo power" does that include people who already have Nintendo Power? Like is it gonna be this years christmas gift? Or is it gonna be for new subscribers only?

Ian SaneNovember 04, 2003

Well I'm happy that I don't have to buy a new Gamecube but I'm still pretty disappointed. Zelda fans have been asking for this since Super Mario All Stars was released ten years ago. It should be sold in stores PERIOD.

I guess I'll go with number 3 though I was really only planning on buying one of those titles originally (Mario Kart). It sucks that the ten or so Nintendo first party games I already own don't count for squat.

I imagine that this is only for new Nintendo Power subscribers since Nintendo seems to only reward newcombers these days. If I don't get this disc for buying a Cube years ago you're probably not going to get it for subscribing years ago.

PaleMike Gamin, Contributing EditorNovember 04, 2003

You're right, if they launch this club thing... I'll be pissed if I can't register any of the games a currently own. That's a pretty lame thing for them to do.

Gibdo MasterNovember 04, 2003

I don't know which one I'm going with. I absolutely hate Nintendo Power (pretty much all gaming mags for that matter) and I really don't know if I'll be getting Mario Kart. Even though I've played and enjoyed just about all of them I haven't boughten one yet.

EDIT: Wait a minute. I just re-read the topic post and realized you have to buy TWO games! That's crap. It's especially crap when you can't use past first party games toward this. I guess I'll be subscribing to Nintendo Power. By the way does anyone know if the disk will be packaged with the GameCube bundle or will it be like past bundles where they hand you the disk upon purchase. If that's the case maybe Best Buy will sell these separately like the past bonus disks.

PaleMike Gamin, Contributing EditorNovember 04, 2003

I like Nintendo Power. Its always a very interesting read. I don't read it for late breaking news, rather the silly nintendo stuff that is always included. I'm a dork like that, but stickers, and pokemon cards seem to make my day. =P

Anyway, I checked up on my "My Nintendo" account and it kind of creeped me out. Now I was a subscriber to Nintendo power WAAAAY back in the day. Then I had a fairly long hiatus from the magazine...(like 7 years)...Keep in mind that this dates back to pre-main stream internet. Anyway, my nintendo now remember my original subscription and even the gifts I got with it. It talks about how I received my Dragon Warrior Game Pak as my free gift in 1990. I think thats pretty interesting cause they did that all based on my address somehow... They also say i got a silver pin that hasn't shipped yet....from back in 91. =P It would be pretty cool if that just turned up in the mail. Anyway, the moral to my silly story is this...its pretty cool that my My Nintendo account says i've been a member since 1989. Beat that. =P

edit: I thought i'd add to my childish gloating with some proof. =P

Check this out:

http://www.nintendo.com/zeldaclassic/

Seems like you have to try the link a few times before you can get in.

Also, looks like if you buy the 2 games you get a head start on the disk Nov. 11 versus Nov 17 for the Nintendo power subscription.

PaleMike Gamin, Contributing EditorNovember 04, 2003

i can't get any of these links to work.. :-/

Ian SaneNovember 04, 2003

I got the Zelda link to work a few minutes ago but now it doesn't. I suspect they found out people were looking at it and removed it from the site.

I signed up for the MyNintendo thing and they accept Canadians so it looks like it won't be too hard for us Canucks to get in on the deal. They even tracked my orders in Canadian funds.

Dr_PillNovember 04, 2003

I got the link to work first time (lucky me) but did you read what the site said?
They misspelled Wind Waker, twice. face-icon-small-confused.gif The Site says it includes "The Legend of Zelda: Wind Walker Demo" and a "Special The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Walker: The Movie Experience."

I'm usually not one to nitpick but this is a Nintendo game on the Nintendo site. You'd think someone would catch that.

KnowsNothingNovember 04, 2003

I already subscribe to NP. I don't really like it, but I get it just to.....have....it....

anyway, I resubcribe every year so this shouldn't be a problem. UNLESS........ Nintendo dcides to go jack-ass on me. :\

joshnickersonNovember 04, 2003

Booyah! But, herein lies the problem... I was planning on getting a Platinum cube to get the disc, renew my subscription to Nintendo Power AND buy both Mario Kart and Mario & Luigi...
But which one do I choose? I mean, is it crazy to buy a new cube just for the Platinum color when my old one works just fine?

KnowsNothingNovember 04, 2003

buy mario to the kizzle and his bro too.

ssj4_androidNovember 04, 2003

Cool. I have Mario Kart preordered, and I was thinking about getting Mario & Luigi.
EDIT: Wait a sec, you missed something. It says register the two games AND the gamecube itself. Hm....

Berto2KNovember 04, 2003

And with Mario Kart being released in NA in about 2 weeks, this "Club" must also be starting very soon. I wouldn't imagine Nintendo to start that later like in mid December, but that would be logical, this is Nintendo we are talking about afterall. face-icon-small-tongue.gif

KnowsNothingNovember 04, 2003

either
A: nintendo can't spell
or
B: the wind walker is their creative name for WW2 -_______-

Ian SaneNovember 04, 2003

"Wait a sec, you missed something. It says register the two games AND the gamecube itself."

I assume you can register an old Gamecube. It would be really stupid otherwise and would kill the whole "existing owners can get it to" thing. Though that may screw over people who have used or imported Cubes. Seems rather idiotic to have to register a Cube as well since it's safe to assume that anyone who wants a Zelda Gamecube discs owns a system as well. Though if that screws you over then just go the NP route.

"is it crazy to buy a new cube just for the Platinum color when my old one works just fine?"

Yes it is... unless you're rich in which case I have no problem with you artificially inflating the Cube market share.

mouse_clickerNovember 04, 2003

I'm wondering how we'll register our Gamecubes- the games have a special PIN, according to the site, but our beloved Cubes didn't have anything of the sort.

Bill AurionNovember 04, 2003

They will most likely ask for the barcode number on the back of the system...

KnowsNothingNovember 04, 2003

FOO-GOO-MA-GOO

mouse_clickerNovember 04, 2003

You took off yoour barcode?? face-icon-small-shocked.gif

Also, is your avatar Gary Coleman with half his skull removed?

KnowsNothingNovember 04, 2003

oops! No I didn't! I lied! My mind was somwhere else. face-icon-small-tongue.gif

Naw, my avatar is just some random picture with half his skull removed. But it might as well be Gary Coleman, so BAM! My avatar now features Gary Coleman!

Ian SaneNovember 04, 2003

Barcode would be a pretty good way of doing it. That way people who bought used consoles can still get in since they are likely to be only person who knows the code. Imports might still screw you over though.

DavideoNovember 04, 2003

I could pull up a list off all gamecube upc codes (bar codes) right now off the internet if I wanted to. They'd have to come up w/ a unique serial code for all of their games. It won't be a problem for the Gamecube itself, as all cubes have a unique serial code, but the games themselves will need to be updated.

martNovember 04, 2003

I have a question....

They say on November 11 you can start to register. And they say you need to register two of the games that is listed. Why would they start November 11 if most of the games listed doesn't even come out until after the 11th, like mario kart comes out on the 17th, and 1080 comes out on december.

Ian SaneNovember 04, 2003

"Why would they start November 11 if most of the games listed doesn't even come out until after the 11th, like mario kart comes out on the 17th, and 1080 comes out on december."

Well Mario Party 5 comes out on November 11 so it's possible for people to at least register one game starting then. But no one would be able to register two of those games at that time unless they buy two copies of Mario Party 5. Maybe that's Nintendo's plan all along so that hardcore fans will buy extra copies of Mario Party 5 thus making an unexciting cookie-cutter sequel into a huge seller. face-icon-small-smile.gif

Bill AurionNovember 04, 2003

Mario Party has always been a huge seller, and imo, it's the perfect party game...

Grey NinjaNovember 04, 2003

Well, it seems that I have added Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga to my MUST BUY list. face-icon-small-wink.gif

mouse_clickerNovember 04, 2003

Same here- I had contemplated buying it, but now I have to. Damn you, Nintendo! Forcing me to play your great games just so I can play your other great games!

KnoxxvilleNovember 04, 2003

I feel the same way Mouse Clicker! I think I might just flash some backups (since I own all the Zelda games anyway ) to the 'ol GBA RAM cart, plug it in to my trusty Game Boy Player and call it a day! I mean, that'll cover Zelda 1 and 2. Link to the past is already a GBA game, and I have the Ocarina of Time/ Master Quest disc already. And EVERYONE knows that Majora was more of an expansion than an brand new title anyway so BAM!

WHO NEEDS IT!

MWAHAHAHAHAHA (cough, cough) HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA (hack) HAAAAAAAAAAAAA! (wheeze).....whew.......

I disagree. MM may have the same engine as OoT, but the gameplay concepts are completly different; side quests are just as important as the main quest, there is a strong emphesis on narrative, Link can transform, and the time system combine to make MM pretty different to OoT. Just my opinion though, of course.

I'm really looking foward to this disc, I just hope it will come to PAL territories.

Ian SaneNovember 04, 2003

"And EVERYONE knows that Majora was more of an expansion than an brand new title anyway so BAM!"

I typically find that anyone who says that has never played Majora's Mask for more than a few hours and are usually the same people that think Super Mario Sunshine is the worst game ever made.

Somebody answer this question, the wording of these announcements haven't been great, so answer this please.

If I have had a subscription to Nintendo Power for some 2 years now, and I just renewed it in early october, and I got an email that said I wouldn't get November's issue till late november, am I going to recieve the disk in the mail with november's magazine, the one after, or am I not going to recieve it at all?

I think when you order your subscription you have to ask for the disc as your bonus gift, so you might have missed out...face-icon-small-frown.gif

THE ONENovember 05, 2003

What if we rent the games and register them? will that count? or do we need a reciept?

BloodworthDaniel Bloodworth, Staff AlumnusNovember 05, 2003

The pin will likely be unique and IF it were included in rental chain stocks, would only work for the first person that rents it. If they weren't unique, we could just post them in the forums and have a grand old time.

THE ONENovember 05, 2003

thanks for telling me

PaleMike Gamin, Contributing EditorNovember 11, 2003

Hmm...just to add some new speculation to how you may be able to get the disc. Last year we received the Smash Bros Orchestral CD in our december issue of Nintendo Power. Well I just noticed that this years december issue has been delayed and we will not receive it until around Nov 25th...could this mean that they MAY be including the disc right away for subscribers? Possibly?? =P

PaleMike Gamin, Contributing EditorNovember 11, 2003

Oh and just so everyone knows, registration started today..

http://www.nintendo.com/cpp/register/index.jsp

I just now realized I'm screwed because I have a Q....somehow i didn't make that connection before. At least i'll nab the disc in one of teh other ways..i was just hoping for multiple copies so I could hook up less fortunate friends.

SuperLink666November 11, 2003

Just registered my GC and GBA! Thats cool but I didnt get any points or nothing. It's cool how they have every serial number in their system tho.
