Nintendo's R&D1 director and Wario Ware creator talks about Miyamoto, GBA 2 and the next Metroid game.

During their ECTS rounds, CVG managed to tackle Nintendo's Yoshio Sakamoto, tie him to a chair, and interrogate him about the goings-on at Nintendo. The Brits managed to wrangle some pretty interesting information out of him, although Sakamoto-san did sort of side-step the tough questions, as you can see below:

Question: Since both the Game Boy and also the Virtual Boy [Mr. Sakamoto laughs at the mention of Virtual Boy] coming from R&D1, are you personally involved with the GBA 2, or whatever the next handheld's going to be named?

Sakamoto: Information on the next handheld is rather limited, though I'd love to tell you more! I was not personally involved myself in the hardware configuration of the Game Boy, but I know that Nintendo is always working on the next generation of systems, be it handheld or console game machines.

As for the next handheld system, we are exchanging views from the creator's point of view and we are having a series of discussions and meetings about what kind of technologies should be there to be included on the next generation handheld machine. That's about all I can tell you right now.

Question: Are you currently working on games for the next handheld console or the sequel to GameCube?

Sakamoto: That's a really tough and delicate question. What I can tell you is that most of R&D1 is concentrating on handheld gaming, and whatever machines Nintendo is working on, we are preparing for that.

We are really trying to identify what's necessary to make our games different - what kind of elements should be there to make for very good mobile games.

The interview covers all other bases about the man and his work, from how he got his start at Nintendo, how Wario Ware came about, Sony's Eye Toy device, and SNES-GBA ports.
