Our favorite game designer turns 50 today!

That tan sport coat wearing wild man, Shigeru Miyamoto turns 50 years old today. In celebration of the event, we've compiled a little information for you about his amazing individual.

Miyamoto was born in raised in a small town outside Kyoto, Japan called Sonebe. His natural zeal for exploring his surroundings coupled with an unparalelled imagination, resulted in the man we know today, the creator of characters like Link, Mario, Donkey Kong ... a veritable lexicon of gaming history.

Miyamoto studied Industrial Design at the Kanazawa Minici College of Industrial Arts and Crafts in 1970, taking five years to complete his course load. Upon graduation, Miyamoto had his father get in touch with an old friend (none other than Hiroshi Yamauchi) who ran a toy company named, simply, Nintendo. Yamauchi hired Miyamoto as a staff artist, the first in the company. It was 1977, and Miyamoto was only 24.

If this has piqued your interest, head over to the Miyamoto Shrine and read more about Nintendo's resident genius and role model to kids everywhere.

Happy Birthday, Shiggy!

Yeah, Happy Birthday though it is sad to see him getting so old.

Miyamoto hasn't gotten senile quite yet! Or is that the reason we got Mario Galaxy? face-icon-small-cool.gif

Or perhaps he was senile all along. I mean really? Plumbing themed heroes?

I'm not sure what you're implying, but both possibilities receive a resounding no from me.

I wonder how his student training is coming along. He wanted to train other devs to be able of working at his level (and Aonuma botched countless Zeldas in the attempt to get there...), I wonder how many he got there.

The only Zelda Aonuma truly botched was PH.

Oh snap, I am a day late. Stupid time zones.

Happy Birthday and thanks for the Happy Happy Joy Joy.

Aonuma didn't work on PH at all.

Aonuma made Zelda better :P PH improved on WW too.

Miyamoto has been less and less involved with game development, but he does a lot of supervision still. Happy 55 trips around the sun, here is hoping for many more birthdays (and many more games) in the future.

Except for the fact that he did, and discussed it quite a bit in developer round tables, how he worked closely with the director. He is the producer of the series after all.

I wish Miyamoto would go back to directing one or two games. I think the last one he directed was Pikmin?

EDIT: I just looked at MobyGames, and the most recent game I can find that was directed by Miyamoto is... Super Mario 64! Could this really be the last one?
