Baltimore-Area Launch Report

by Justin Nation - November 18, 2001, 3:48 am EST

34 degrees outside, 4:00 AM, and a group of people standing outside shivering their asses off? Must be launch day...

Just got back from the launch at my local Wal-Mart and I must say I was shocked at the turn out. The store had 59 Cubes and they ALL went... easily.

When Ali got me up around 3:15 AM I really originally wasn't going to go. "Nah, who is going to be nuts enough to stand out there ar 3:00 AM?" Well, I'm glad I went. Arriving just before 4:00 AM I was 7th in line and the next 15-20 people showed up within the next 15 minutes. So, bronchitis and all, there I am freezing my ass off. But hey, I got my Cube lovin' and MOST important I got my SPICE controller baby!

Interesting notes:

  • Everyone in front of me was older than I was, something I hadn't really expected but maybe should have... a mix of parents buying Cubes for their kids for Christmas, a wife buying a Cube for her hubby (how the hell do you get THAT going? All I got was a roll of the eyes and "You're nuts" walking out the door), and people who were old schoolers and just have always had a thing for Nintendo.

  • Game selection was ASS. Thank god I already have Rogue Leader or I'd be kind of upset. No Monkey Ball either. *boggle*

  • While I've heard of memory cards possibly being hard to get there appeared to be a ton there to me. Weird.

  • Spice controllers are DEFINITELY in short supply. There were tons of every other color and maybe 3 or 4 ones for the orange-loving freaks out there

  • I personally thank every person in line for being very mature and outright courteous when the numbers were handed out and the doors opened. Nobody trying to get ahead, everyone went back calmly and got their Cubes... I heard at the same store for the PS2 launch the police were called in to restore order. Funny thing what the "mature" system brings to the table in that regard compared to the kids toy, eh?

  • If you want an X-Box the store seemed to still have quite a few in stock. LOL!
