A Demo in Luigi’s Mansion?

Luigi’s Mansion contains lots of ghosts and a kidnapped sibling. It also seems to contain a demo of an upcoming game?! Details inside.

Update: As it turns out, our speculation was correct! The lucky folks at IGN Cube were sent American GameCube's and Software today, including a copy of Luigi's Mansion. The demo is a two minute movie of the Pikmin in action. You can go to IGN and view the movie right here.

Original Story: GameSpot has just received final GameCube packaging from Nintendo for the system and games and posted several pictures of them. In one picture of the Luigi’s Mansion box, many readers noticed on the back, in the bottom right hand above the UPC Code is a small box with the following caption:

"Includes demo rated E by the ESRB"

It’s not unheard of for developers to include demos of upcoming games on an additional disc bundled along with the game. This would be the first time a demo would actually be packaged as part of a Nintendo game, like an “extra” feature seen on movie DVDs. Other companies have included demos before, for example THPS2 on Playstation included the demo to Matt Hoffman's Pro BMX.

While the caption seems to confirm the demo, there is no indication what the demo might be, or if it will be playable. The safest guess is probably Pikmin, which will be released 2 weeks after Luigi’s Mansion and is the only other “E” game Nintendo will release in 2001.

Rest assured, we’re looking into this and will have more soon.

It’s also worth noting that the North American GameCube packaging does not seem to have the handle exposed.
