Satoru Iwata Interview

Thank's to fenegi we've got another great interview to read! Bonus: See how the Dolphin name came about!

Video Senki is a great little site where fenegi (the webmaster,) takes Japanese news and translates for an english audience.

His latest feature is taken from Gekkan Ascii and features Satoru Iwata.

It mainly talks about the reasonings of Nintendo's hardware decisions but it also touches on the Dolphin name (which Billy just mentioned in a recent news item.)

Here's a small excerpt:

Q: What special features are in Flipper?

A: Flipper contains the graphic technology, some built-in DRAM, an audio DSP, and several interface features, all in a singlepackage. It's the heart of the system, with Gekko and Splash, the memory, on either side. Splash and Flipper were named to createthe image of a dolphin, and Gekko is [Japanese for] moonlight. If you can picture the moon, and then a dolphin splashing under it, then it'ssimple to remember the basic system board design.

Q: A dolphin splashing in the moonlight...

A: Yes. Another major facet of this configuration is memory access. You could say the Gamecube's design resembles the PS2 overall; however, instead of offering DMA access between the CPU and main memory, the Gamecube connects memory directly to the video chip. [The Xbox is the same way.]

Interesting, eh? Be sure to read the rest of the interview!
