Here's a rough rundown of the Conference Call with Peter Main and Satoru Iwata this morning ...

Be gentle, dear readers. These notes were taken on the fly this morning, but there's GREAT information inside!

Direct link to both system screens with the GBA link cable. GBA screen appears to be a physical extension of the TV screen Kirby falls of edge of TV screen, and into the GBA.

No GBA Cartridge needed for GCN interactivity. GCN features only accessible with GBA connected.

Peter Main pronounced Pikmin (Peek-Man).

Disney’s Mickey to be published by Nintendo.

Sega referred to as “old adversaries.”

N64 sales exceeded PS1 in the year after launch. Year two hurt them.

Debut in 2002. Zelda “brand new iteration, beyond what was shown at E3”. Pokemon is in the works, announcement in early 2002! Mario Sunshine, due next summer in Japan.

Next star in waiting, “PeekMan.” A different kind of enjoyment.

Smash Bros. “There’s something satisfying about beating the stuffing out of Kirby, isn’t there?”

Launch Date for GameCube “to better serve players and retailers”. Sunday, November 18th. Iron out supply pipeline, increase day 1retail shipments to 700,000 … 25% more than would be available on Nov. 5th. This date is the weekend before Thanksgiving.

“The best system we’ve ever designed, playing exclusive Nintendo hits.”

“New worlds unfolding with that unique ‘double play’ connection with Game Boy Advance.

Nintendo has an open-field to make an impression in Japan, with PS2 almost two-years old, and Microsoft not appearing this year.

Nintendo targets kids, since they have the most TIME to play games. They are the only manufacturer that SERIOUSLY targets kids. Kids are the purest and truest judges of game quality. Hardest thing in the business is to make a game that is not too childlike or too mature, but is still fun. (Mario)

Nintendo will NOT be affected by what other companies do.

Game pricing First Party $49.95. Street price at that price.

Third Party titles at launch 7-8. Growing to 20 by year-end.

NA target for GBA 5Million, 15M software. Will take another look in September. Current sell through 1.5 million.

Wholesale price for GCN $192, software is $40 even.

Square, other third-parties: More third party support than what was shown. Focus is on quality, not number of titles. Nothing to announce on Square or Perfect Dark Zero.

Launch was delayed to increase quantity, and to OWN Thanksgiving Weekend in US.

Japan supply is 2.5M by year end, 4M by March.

“Locked and Loaded for 700K” in US.

No bundling. “Someone else thought that was a good idea, and we wish them well with it.”

Awareness, trial, not about locking up sales (pre-orders).

November 5th was a SHIP date, not street date … Street was to be the 8th or 9th.

Retail concerns about Sunday launch? Retailers get product on Thursday or Friday, and prep for Sunday (early launch???)

X-Box promotion vs. Nintendo’s silence! Why did you allow Microsoft to get a head start? BY DESIGN, no PR, in-store until Easter for GBA, then 9-Week BLITZ. Gamers checked out the interactive units, then bought it. Nintendo confident that between now and Launch, they can show off some great titles, and a compelling price point. National Tour, GameCube Clubs. 12 Major cities, a week to 10 days. Installation of interactives (kiosks) mid to late October. Merchandising appearing in-store in late September.

Nintendo does not expect Microsoft to launch in Japan this year. “Almost impossible.”

Ship on Thursday before Launch!

50/50 colors. Color was not the reason for delay. 350K of each.

Launch for Mario Sunshine, no US date. Summer for Japan.

Broadband Expansion, no announcements at SpaceWorld? Plans? GCN is brought to market as a GAME machine, prepared for “tomorrow”. Not prepared to talk about it, and not going to charge customers for connectivity they can’t use.

Panasonic GCN: Actual WORKING model to be shown at SpaceWorld over next three days.

Software First to Third ratio … more even that historically. 80/20 at first, moving towards 60/40 later. Nintendo titles sell the system. Nintendo’s competitors (Sony, Microsoft) can only dream of selling in quantities Nintendo’s first party titles do.

Mother 3 (Earthbound) updated for GCN? Nothing to tell.

Nintendo profitability, no money lost on past consoles. Small loss on GCN (no number) initially. Profitable early next year.

Animal Forest is NOT guaranteed for America … NOA is constantly re-evaluating the title.

Soul Calibur 2: SC was the peak of third-party games for DC. Nintendo taking steps to avoid that with GCN? Nintendo’s titles will better than Dreamcast’s titles at launch,

Firm “No comment” about Square working for Nintendo after Yamauchi “rebuked” them in January.

Nintendojo: Zelda looks different, two separate titles? The new look WILL be the actual product. Miyamoto changed it after careful consideration.

US Economic Slowdown affect GCN sales? Industry is UP 20% each year, even in tough times. This form of entertainment enlightens otherwise tough circumstances. All family entertainment, plus niche products. Great deal at $199, others selling $500 bundles might want to re-think that.

Any of the announced games with Online features? No announcements.

Retro not capable of handling Metroid franchise? Nintendo to take over? All second parties work closely with EAD, including Retro. Nintendo optimistic about Metroid being great.

Nintendo launching before Thanksgiving during cherished American “Family values” holiday. Nintendo’s thoughts on antisocial behavior study? All hypotheses are unproven, Thanksgiving is a great time to bring Nintendo’s family products to the US.

GCN’s copyright protections: 3.5” disc is proprietary and not open. That should be strong enough (dodged the question).

Nintendo’s plan to defeat Sony’s lead: Sony only has a handful of great titles out of 125.

First-Party titles in development for older demographic? Wave Race, Eternal Darkness. Nintendo is going to protect the younger market “at all costs,” then focus on older market.
