The popular Japanese gaming rag Famitsu speaks to Nintendo’s Peter Main about E3 and what's coming up next.

Core Magazine has translated a Famitsu interview with Peter Main. Main says E3 went better than they had anticipated and also explains the much-ballyhooed pre-E3 statement by Yamauchi about possibly suspending GameCube (“I know Mr. Yamauchi and Miyamoto's comments were only meant to encourage us.”)

Here’s a snippet:

Famitsu: How many games can we expect at launch?

Main: In America we'll launch with 4-5 first party titles, which will grow to 7 by Christmas. In Japan we'll launch with 2-3 games, which will grow to about 5 first-party titles by the end of the year. So we're improving on the N64 launch which only had 2 titles. [laughs..] By comparison the PlayStation 2 had 25 titles at launch, but only a few actually sold. So the number of titles won't be a problem. The most important thing is to have the highest quality games in every genre.

Famitsu: What about networking plans?

Main: As you know, Nintendo has embraced networking more than any other developer. We've done the hard work already, and we're ready to use the Internet whenever we want. As a company though, Nintendo is very careful to separate what we're selling today, and what we plan to sell tomorrow. Even if we wanted to release an online game now, we would have no way of knowing whether it would be a hit, so we're not rushing things. The only one rushing is Xbox.

Famitsu: Are you worried that DVD movies will sell better than GameCube games due to Matsushita's DVD compatible GameCube system?

Main: I can't get into specifics, but I don't think it will be a problem. The price will competitive when compared to the PlayStation 2 though. We'll be able to talk openly regarding Matsushita's GameCube at SpaceWorld in August. We hope everyone in Japan is looking forward to it as much as we are.
