CRITERION SOFTWARE ANNOUNCES RENDERWARE PLATFORM
Audio and physics are the latest additions to the leading middleware
solution
for the gaming industry
Guildford, UK - 9th March 2001 - Criterion Software today announces its new
RenderWare® Platform - a middleware solution offering game studios a tightly
integrated game development framework incorporating 2D/3D graphics, audio
and physics modules.
"RenderWare Platform is great news for the game development community at
large," said Dennis Harper, Vice President, Product Development, Pacific
Coast Power and Light. "A tightly integrated 2D/3D graphics, audio and
physics middleware solution will have a truly beneficial impact on
development, allowing us to unleash the full potential of our teams by
allowing them to focus their development effort on content and gameplay
rather than the technology itself."
RenderWare Platform builds on Criterion Software's highly successful
RenderWare3, its 2D/3D graphics toolkit, to provide developers with a
powerful, truly multi-platform development environment. Built on an open
and flexible architecture, RenderWare Platform initially incorporates 2D/3D
graphics, audio and physics modules, with additional modules to follow.
"The RenderWare3 middleware toolkit has been wildly successful, with 11
titles shipping in the first year and more than 100 titles now in
development at many of the top developers and publishers around the world,"
said David Lau-Kee, Criterion Software's President. "With RenderWare3 we've
proven that middleware facilitates game development, and because of its
success our customers have asked us to provide additional technology modules
tightly integrated with RenderWare3 - the result is RenderWare Platform."
He added "By using RenderWare Platform, game developers will deliver better
titles on time and within budget, while porting their titles to multiple
platforms quickly and easily, thereby dramatically increasing their ROI."
"Criterion already delivers a powerful and flexible middleware solution.
Broadening this to include other tightly integrated components such as audio
and physics is a natural progression," said Jon Peddie, President, Jon
Peddie Associates. "Game development methodologies have to become more
sophisticated and once again, Criterion Software is at the forefront,
providing tools that will empower game developers to focus on what really
matters to consumers, content and gameplay."
The first three modules of the RenderWare Platform are:
RenderWare Graphics - The world-leading, high performance, totally flexible,
truly multi-platform, 2D/3D graphics toolkit, previously known as
RenderWare3.
RenderWare Audio - An extensible, data-driven, multi-platform interactive
audio engine with Sound Designer tool support. RenderWare Audio has a light
external API used to control the data-driven architecture. RenderWare Audio
includes support for 3D positional audio, which on PlayStation® 2, is
provided by Sensaura™ 3D Positional Audio.
RenderWare Physics - A portfolio of game/genre specific physics effects
built on a common underlying maths library. Some components are being
developed in-house at Criterion and some sourced from third parties.
Criterion Software intends to offer RenderWare Platform for all major game
consoles and PC and it will be demonstrated on Criterion's booth #818 at the
Game Developer Conference - 22nd - 24th March 2001 in San Jose.
