The Australian Report Version 1.0

by Kosta Andreadis - January 6, 2000, 4:11 pm EST

Wondering what's going on in the land down under?

First and foremost, it's good to be back! So good in fact that PlanetN2000 will now cover news and Dolphin related titbits that occur in my homeland, which happens to be down under. Under what I'm not exactly sure, oh yeah, underneath "America". Ha! Well as this is the first issue of the ever popular new section I think I'll kick it off with a mediocre bang.

Dolphin competitor narrowed down to just one

"The most embarrassing console launch in history destroys any chance Sega had of competing with Nintendo" (N64 Gamer) Looked on as one of Nintendo's competitors in the next generation console race, the Sega Dreamcast's launch here down under has been anything but a success. Lack of advertising, lack of console numbers, a very high price($500 AUS), and no proper promotion leaves everyone down under saying "what's a Dreamcast?" It's so bad that people playing the demos in a local Toys R' Us think they're playing the latest PC game. So guess it's Sony's Playstation 2 versus Nintendo's Dolphin, in Australia anyway.

Now for something with a little more bite...

Sucker Punch Interview

With news like this I'll soon coin the phrase "Only on PlanetN2000's Australian Report!" But seriously an Australian magazine by the name of N64 Gamer had a little chat with the Dolphin developer and this is what they had to say, in more or less words.

"We realize that the Dolphin will be overwhelmingly powerful, even dwarfing the power of the Playstation 2. It is therefore in our interest to jump onto this successful platform and produce games with brilliance never seen before" said one Sucker Punch staff member. And they went on to say that a title using the Rocket: Robot on wheels engine is being made for Dolphin. The team at Sucker Punch mentioned that Zelda was their fave game on the N64 and that they are planning to recreate a similar feel with their Dolphin game, hence at a larger and more detailed scale.

What else? Well not much to be honest, just seems the Australian media are recycling news that we reported long ago but there is something interesting to note. At the Sydney millennium celebration. one of the worlds' biggest mind you, they had large floats on the river in the shape of animals, and one of them was a huge Dolphin. Well apparently they had advertising space on them, like most thing these days, the Dolphin float was the most expensive. The reason? Because it's a symbol of peace and co-existence, and the most attractive to viewers. All hail free publicity!
