Core Magazine gets an interview with Hiroshi Imanishi (not Yamauchi). Imanishi calls the PSX ad campaigns "novel promotion".
Our friends over at Core Magazine snagged a little interview with Nintendo's Managing Director: Hiroshi Imanishi. He talks about Nintendo's past successes and (hopeful) future conquests, too.
Here's a sample of the wonderful goodness:
Question: Do you think Nintendo has been deprived of the same market opportunity as when you launched the Famicom (NES)?
Imanishi-san: I wouldn't say deprived, no. For example, 30 Million Nintendo 64 units have been sold worldwide. Certainly though, the PlayStation was a massive success, partially because it appealed to old and young players through novel promotion. The PlayStation succeeded the Super Famicom in terms of hardware and software evolution.
Question: What was Nintendo's thinking behind the N64 platform?
Imanishi-san: The concept behind the Nintendo 64 was; the industry will collapse if the same types of software continue being developed. There was a serious need for new hardware, and more importantly, new software concepts. However, the technology posed a hurdle for most software developers, and severely limited development on the N64.
