In the interest of clearing shelf space.

The Nintendo Direct has given new details about the upcoming update to Animal Crossing: New Leaf.

In addition to being available for existing owners, the update will be rolled into a new package called "Animal Crossing: Welcome Amiibo" that launches this fall. The bundle will come with an Amiibo card from a new series of Animal Crossing Amiibo cards was also announced.

More details about the update and the future of the Animal Crossing franchise will come in an Animal Crossing Mini-Direct later this year. UPDATE: The Japanese Direct indicated the video will air November 2.

The story was updated to correct an error: the amiibo card was additionally noted as exclusive.

Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in.

Very keen to hear what the functionality will be.

Regarding the new series of cards that was announced: that's a surprise. I mean, how many more characters are there to be released? It feels like 4 series of cards is already a pretty huge amount. Maybe they realize that adding functionality will boost interest and want to be able to take advantage? Or maybe they realize that Animal Crossing fans are an easy mark?

Wait... So, I bought Animal Crossing: New Leaf on launch day, both digital and physical, bought the Animal Crossing 3DS XL (which duplicated a digital purchase I already have), bought every Animal Crossing amiibo figure at launch, including the Amiibo Festival, then bought 18-22 packs of each series of Animal Crossing cards when they came out, jumped through hoops to put together the set of 404 US cards, imported the two Japanese-exclusive cards (paying over $50 for Isabelle alone), *and* drove about 3-hours (round trip) to track down a Nintendo sales rep to get me one of those fancy card binders...

And now Nintendo expects me to buy another copy of New Leaf for an exclusive card?

Okay.

We just updated the story. No confirmation of an explicitly exclusive Amiibo Card in the Welcome Amiibo Bundle... just yet...

That is to say, I fully expect it to be an Amiibo card from the same wave of 50, but it MAY have slight design features that make it "exclusive". In much the same way, the Amiibo cards that came with Animal Crossing Amiibo Festival had different backings, and thus while functionally identical to the regular cards and otherwise 99% the same visually, the Amiibo Festival cards COULD be considered "exclusive" for the amiibo-hungry collector.

By which I mean to say, I'm putting in a pre-order ASAP.

Yeah... was just about to post...

It was pointed out to me elsewhere - I'm at work, so I was going from summaries and several mention 'exclusive' card.  Just watched the snippet myself and it *does* say the card is 'from the new wave' - so yay!  Doesn't sound like it will require buying another copy of the game.

While I might be willing to, I suspect there would likely be some backlash if they did an exclusive card. ;)

Yeah, I finally was able to watch the Direct during my lunch break and my feeling is that it is like the Happy Home Designer game. It came with an Amiibo card from the Series 1 set but it was random and you could acquire it through the Amiibo packs. Watching the direct, I had the sense (and am hoping) that's what they are doing again when they say it comes with an exclusive card. Exclusive in that comes from this new set of trading cards and not like Shadow Mewtwo which can only be acquired through Pokken Tournament.
