Just in time for the launch of New 3DS!

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS is getting Amiibo support in an update that will be rolling out tomorrow, Nintendo of Europe has just announced.

"A free update will also be released on 10th February for Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS that will enable amiibo from the Super Smash Bros. Collection to be used with the new systems," the company shared in a press release.

One of the added features to New Nintendo 3DS is built-in NFC functionality, so you'll be able to scan your figurines on the bottom screen without any additional hardware. However, those with an older model of Nintendo's handheld will have to wait for the release of a portal-like attachment.

I hope the Wii U Smash data saved on my amiibo will also work with the 3DS game, but until Nintendo releases that little wireless amiibo scanner for older 3DS models, I won't find out anyway. I'm in no rush to snap up a New 3DS... unless they want to entice me with a Xenoblade special edition in April...
