A major update has arrived for one of Nintendo’s freemium 3DS games.

An update for Steel Diver: Sub Wars, Version 4.0, is available now on the 3DS eShop.

The 4.0 update includes a series of changes over the previous version. For starters, it’s now possible for players to remodel each of the game’s 39 subs in the game for $0.99 each. Remodeling a sub will upgrade the number of crew members it can hold to six. Previously, each sub had a different number of crew members, which act like stat bonuses, that could fit in each.

The play coin requirement for players trying to go online with the free version of the game has also been removed. For more changes in the 4.0 update, check out the list below.

- The angle at which subs surface and dive has been made less steep so it’s now easier to evade attacks.

- Subs with a health of six or more now have an added defense bonus.

- In single player missions, crew members that have already been collected will no longer appear, making it easier to collect them all.

- Players between Level 30 and 49 can now play Matched-Skill Battles against one another online.

- The starting positions on the Hot Springs map have reverted to how they were in Version 1.0.

- A bug has been fixed that damaged a player’s subs when they sunk an enemy.

This is a cool update! (Still wish they'd make new missions for the single player campaign.)

I tinkered with this when it launched... is the online community active?

Yes, very much so.
