Celebrating 22 years of Kart action.

Super Mario Kart is now available on the Wii U Virtual Console in North America. The Super Nintendo classic costs $7.99.

Super Mario Kart has been released on the Wii U Virtual Console in honor of the game’s upcoming 22nd anniversary. It's already been released in Japan back in 2013, and in Europe this past March.

Damn I feel old! I remember with this first came out and my cousin got it for me for my birthday present! We used to whip the hell out of each other playing this game. Ahhh, fond memories!

I remember when this first came out too.  This is still one of the best Mario Karts.  This game still has some things that aren't represented  in future sequels.

Things I really loved about this game:

1) The moles sticking to your Kart.  It was infuriating in the best way possible.
2) Characters with their own special attacks.  I loved that each of the computer players had their own unique attacks.  It made racing them feel different.  The only problem is I wished I could have those same powers.  Bowser's fireballs were great.
3) The Feather, Shortcuts, and attacks that change the race.  I loved using attacks to prevent the opponents from making jumps and having to repeat laps.  I loved using the Feather to do insane shortcuts.

To me the only Mario Kart that comes close to beating SNES Kart is Nintendo 64.  And I think the N64 game is the only game that did the Blue Turtle Shell properly.

I've heard super circuit has the best mario kart AI. I've heard they are perfectly fair and they never ever cheat. :smug:

I think super circuit had an interesting thing where you could put the blue shell behind you and then next lap it would ambush whoever is in first place when they pass by.

I think this game is one of those rare SNES games (next to the original Star Fox) that has aged pretty bad....it looks awful, not like SNES SMW, TLOZALTTP, Super Metroid, Super Mario RPG, etc. So no purchase for me...although I heard Cybernator is coming....sweet!

It looks dated, but it does not look bad.  I think it doesn't suffer from the same problems of Star Fox because of some careful design chooses.  Anyway, the game is fantastic.

I'm sorry but this is what makes the SNES game unplayable to me.  On the higher difficulties, having you're rival constantly spamming infinite projectile attacks at you is just cheap as fuck.  At least in later Mario Kart, the computer players are limited to the same amount of items you are, so if you're in first the computer can't spam a million attacks at you like they can in SNES.  I'd take a million Blue Shells over this shit any day since at least with Blue Shells there is a chance one might not be thrown during the race and when they are, it usually 1 or 2 per race.  Where as the enemy attacks in SNES are all the time in every race.

Oh and if your rival is Mario or Luigi in SNES you might as well just restart the game since they get infinite star power making it impossible to even touch them since they love to use it to block any attacks which the computer always perfectly knows when you throw and always crashes into you with it, since the computer always knows where you're about to pass them as well.

You know I never remember having that item problem at all.

I think the current system is why more frustrating.  I have been hit by a Blue Shell followed, by red or green, and any number of crazy last effort items from the back…and have fallen behind to last place.

It drives me crazy.  But the original system didn't seem to have that problem…or over powered rubber banding.  Yes, I know it had rubber banding,  but it never seemed to be as bad as the current games are.
