Square Enix’s 3DS JRPG is a bona fide sales hit.

Bravely Default, the 3DS role-playing game published by Square Enix, has sold a million units worldwide since first hitting Japanese store shelves back in October 2012, according to a report from Dengeki Online.

The sales figures take into account versions of the game across all territories and formats, including copies downloaded via the eShop. Japanese sales account for roughly 40% of the game’s total, meaning 600,000 copies have been sold in overseas markets so far.

Over a year after its Japanese launch, Bravely Default released in December 2013 in Europe and February 2014 in North America. It reportedly sold 200,000 units in its first few weeks of American availability.

A sequel, titled Bravely Second, has been announced by Square Enix. No release date is known yet, but you can find the game’s official site here.

I would say good news for classic JRPGs if the game wasn't such an awful let down. I hope they make vast improvements in the sequel. If this can convince Square Enix and other companies to start localizing more JRPGs though, I'm happy, just as long as they don't follow the Bravely Default template.

I find it funny how Square Enix goes nuts on this Final Fantasy XIII project that involves three games, none of which are particularly well received, but this very traditional game that is effectively a Final Fantasy in all but name is a hit.

I haven't got to the part of the game that everyone complains about yet but the game has provided enough enjoyment so far anyway to be worth it.  It's a good game and I'm glad the sequel is almost certainly going to get localized now.

Because traditional Final fantasy is for mobile only with micro transactions.

This tells me that the future of JRPGs is going to be on handhelds. It would not surprise me to see in the future a numbered Final Fantasy (XVI) would appear on the Vita and 3DS successors. With the PS4 not selling so good in Japan it stands to reason that Sony will stay in the handheld market and companies will support Sony and Nintendo's handhelds there as the new normal. Hopefully this convinces SE to support the 3DS the same way they supported the PSP and a new Final Fantasy Tactics game is announced for it soon.

The future of JRPGs has been on handhelds for nearly a decade now. Outside a few notable exceptions, the DS (and to a lesser extent the PSP) got most of the JRPGs last generation.

I wonder how Best Buy's promotion impacted the sales. I got the game from that, but I'm not sure when I might get around to playing it.

I can only hope this means we'll get Dragon Quest VII for 3DS as it's the only game in the series I haven't played, but that may be too much to hope for...
