Squid Odyssey will allow cross download for the 3DS and Wii U.

The 3DS release of Squids Odyssey offers the Wii U version of the game for free on the European eShop.

This cross-buy feature is the first on any Nintendo system. Popularized with the "Cross-Buy" name on PlayStation platforms, cross-buy allows for the owner of a game on one system the ability to own it on another for free. In the case of Squids Odyssey, If you buy the 3DS eShop version of the game, and have your Nintendo Network ID linked up to both your 3DS and Wii U, you will receive the Wii U version of the game for free.

I almost bought the Wii U version on release day. Now I'm glad I waited except that I'm in the US and we still don't know if this will happen for us we just know that the developer wants it to happen

I hope this becomes a standard feature for any game that is identical on multiple same ecosystem platforms (i.e. PS4/Vita, WiiU/3DS, PC/XBO ;))

Chances of PC/Xbox One are slim to nil unless it's a Microsoft game, because if someone buys a game on PC Microsoft has no incentive to let them get the Xbox One version for free (unless the publisher compensates them).

It's already pretty standard on PS4 & Vita, with rare exceptions (most notably from Ubisoft).  But yes, I quite agree with the sentiment. Hopefully this is the beginning of the end of Nintendo getting away with charging for separate versions of all their games, as well.

If Nintendo wants to merge their handheld and home console platforms, this is the first step. Virtual Console should have already been unified.

I agree, uniting the VC would be a huge step forward for Nintendo.

what and give people, especially all those 3DS owners out there, another reason to actually purchase or turn on their Wii U systems!?

Can't turn down yet another opportunity to squeeze another dime out of their loyal fanbase. Times are hard.

You say that resentfully, but you forget Nintendo has been Losing money.

Oh, I know. Times are hard.

But sometimes you gotta give a little to make some headway. Even though this game ultimately means nothing on a grand scale, the gesture of same game on 2 platforms for the price of one might potentially get more people to check it out as they feel they get more for their money. How many people are really going to buy the same game twice?
If they don't want to give it for free, then charge a small premium.
$9.99 for the Wii U ~or~ 3DS version. $12.99 for the WiiU & 3DS version. Like the Blu-ray w/ DVD &/or Digital Copy. The catch more flies w/ honey, by sweetening the pot approach.

I like your last idea. It's kind of like paying $1 to transfer NES games from Wii to Wii U
