One of the most shocking announcements ever!

Luigi has been confirmed as a playable character in both the Wii U and 3DS versions of Super Smash Bros.

Luigi's inclusion in the games should come as no surprise to Smash Bros. fans as the eternal understudy has appeared in every iteration of the series.

This news comes from today's Nintendo Direct presentation and was revealed as part of The Year of Luigi celebration.

We can still hope. They were only screens, no moves list.

Why am i not surprised? ::)

He'll probably be an unlockable character again, just like in the three previous games.

Hurray tradition!

Maybe he'll have a move where he sucks you up in a snot bubble, as a nice nod to dream team.

Of course, that might be removed from the US version. Boo

Remember how Sakurai said not all of our favorite characters will be returning for this game? Well after that I was waiting for Luigi conformation and now I've finally gotten it. Trust me, with Sakurai's statement it was very possible for Luigi to NOT have been included for whatever dumb reason. Thankfully, that didn't happen. I'm happy! :D

I don't think Luigi was ever in danger. My biggest worries were Ness and Lucas, since their franchise isn't as well known. Hopefully, the NA VC release can keep them. Ike might get swapped for another FE character. Lucario is a maybe. Snake and Sonic might need their respective owners to ask for their inclusion, and Snake hasn't really been popping up on Nintendo systems lately.

Ness will stay because he's been in all the previous Smash Bros and his game Mother 2 is still the most popular game in the Mother series, making him the most iconic character from that series.  Lucario should be safe as well considering it was just revealed he has a new form in the upcoming Pokemon X/Y.  Sonic will also stay since we still have Mario & Sonic at the Olympics games coming and Nintendo is even publishing Sonic Lost Worlds, so they're still on good terms.  With Snake, even though Kojima treats Nintendo like shit, since Snake was one of the most popular newcomers in Brawl with one of the most unique movesets, I'd imagine Sakurai wants to keep him and assuming him and Kojima are still friends, I doubt he'll be cut.

The characters I see having the biggest chance of being cut are Lucas, Falco, Ike, and Pokemon Trainers Pokemon.  Lucas got into Brawl because Mother 3 was finally released when Brawl was in development and Sakurai had wanted to include him in Melee.  But with the upcoming Smash Bros, it's been awhile since Mother 3 was released and with that franchise dead since the creator doesn't want to continue it and was never hugely popular to begin with, I could see Sakurai deciding one Mother character with Ness is enough for that series.

Same thing with Star Fox losing a lot of popularity since Brawl, Sakurai might feel 3 Star Fox characters is too much for that franchise now and remove Falco since his moveset is the most similar to Fox.  Ike is almost guaranteed to be cut since Fire Emblem isn't popular enough to get 3 characters and they have to make room for the newest main star Krom.  Plus Marth sure isn't being cut since he's the icon of that series and even had his too games remade since Brawl so Ike is the most likely on the chopping block.

With Pokemon Trainer I could see Sakurai replacing his Pokemon with some different generation starters since the first generation Pokemon had way too much representation in Brawl.  Out of the 6 Pokemon in Brawl, 5 were from the first generation.  That's why I can see starters from different generations replacing them if Sakurai wants to diversify the Pokemon more.

Sonic and Snake were both guest characters. I don't think they're guaranteed at all, kind of like how none of those guest characters in Soul Calibur ever returned. Could always be different for Smash Bros., but I don't want to get my hopes up. If we get two new 3rd party guest characters, we already have Mega Man and Pac Man is the next obvious choice.

I could see Snake getting cut, but I would be absolutely shocked if Sonic weren't in it. He's so popular, and Nintendo and Sega seem pretty close these days.

AdrockAugust 08, 2013

I definitely see at least Sonic making it back considering he's mostly on Nintendo hardware these days anyway, but I still think there's a reasonable chance of him getting cut. I'm tempering my expectations until I'm given reason not to.

I'm sure Sega wants Sonic to be in, so they'll ask and Sakurai will oblige. It's Snake I'm not so sure about. Will the "3rd parties have to ask" rule still be in play for returns or will there be some negotiations involved? Nintendo would probably want something in return for Snake's inclusion eventhough he was so popular.

The reason Snake was in Brawl in the first place is because Sakurai and Kojima are friends and Kojima begged Sakurai to get him in.  Kojima wanted Snake to be in Melee but he asked Sakurai when development was too late, so that's why he was one of the first characters put into Brawl and shown at its reveal.  This is why I think Snake returning would be likely because if it was Kojima's idea to have Snake added in the first place and something he wanted since 2001, so I don't see why he'd suddenly decide he doesn't want Snake in Smash Bros anymore.  Plus Sakurai knows Snake was one of the most popular characters in Brawl and Metal Gear still a very popular franchise, so it's not like he has a reason to cut Snake himself either.

Unless Sakurai and Kojima got into some kind of fight since Brawl came out and don't like each other anymore, I don't see why Snake wouldn't be in the next Smash Bros.

I guess we'll just have to see some sign-in sheets from both their birthday parties.

Luigi Dude, I thought Snake was a terrible character in Brawl and one of my least favorites. However, I hate for any character to be cut.
