Miyamoto Talks 3DS & GBA Versions of Pikmin, Making Pikmin 3 Replayable

Pikmin 3 is meant to make players want to play again.

A 3DS and GBA Pikmin game were both made and scrapped according to an interview with Shigeru Miyamoto.

Miyamoto says it wasn't until the Wii U version that he felt better about the projects, stating that the GBA and 3DS projects "were versions that I wasn't really happy with until we came to this version on the Wii U and I finally felt like I was able to create the Pikmin game that I wanted to create."

Miyamoto also revealed his desire to make Pikmin 3 a more replayable game, feeling that no one went back to the original Pikmin after playing. Though Pikmin 2 was made easier in his opinion, his goal is to broaden the appeal of the gameplay." Whether you are going for high scores, experiencing a story, or playing multiplayer," he says, "regardless of what your personal play style preferences, you'll be able to find something in there for you."

That's the thing about Nintendo's internal workings and its sometimes glacial release pace. There's no way to know how many games have been started and scrapped, sometimes very far into development. The Kirby Wii game being a prominent example.

Yeah. I remember there was a baseball game that Nintendo was a couple months away from releasing near the end of the Cube's life and then it suddenly got pulled from the schedule and ended up cancelled yet it looked practically complete. It probably happens more than we think.

The fact that Miyamoto says he was able to "create the Pikmin game that I wanted to create" has me very interested in Pikmin 3.

Yeah. I was looking forward to that one. It was Pennant Chase Baseball by Exile Interactive (which I believe used to be Angel Studios of the N64 era). It was supposed to come out fall 2005, then delayed to April 2006 and just before then, canceled!

Angel Studios became Rockstar San Diego, not Exile Interactive. Besides Nintendo Pennant Chase Baseball, Exile (who I think are gone now) only other games are MTV Sports: T.J. Lavin's Ultimate BMX on PS1, Toxic Grind on Xbox, World Series Baseball on Xbox, and the Xbox/PS2/DC versions of World Series Baseball 2K3.

Sounds like Nintendo alright.  I love them for it, I just wish they would grow more or organize more efficiently since constantly working on games that aren't going to release destroys their current release rate.  Given they will be almost the sole maker of Wii U games, that is not acceptable.

Same here, other than Power Pros by Konami all of my favorite sports games are made by Nintendo or Sega.
