The future is Black on Nintendo's new system.

Activision finally confirmed that Call of Duty: Black Ops II is coming to Wii U at the Nintendo Direct event today in New York City.

Although there have been various rumours since the game was announced for other platforms earlier this year, this is the first time Activision has officially acknowledged the existence of a Wii U version of the game.

The latest outing from Treyarch, Black Ops II takes the venerable series in a different direction, bringing the frenetic FPS action of prior games into a futuristic setting. The Wii U version can be controlled with the Wii U GamePad, the Pro Controller or the Wii Remote and Nunchuk, and includes unique local mulitplayer features that allows one player to use the TV while another uses the GamePad, eliminating the need for split-screen.

Call of Duty Black Ops II will be released for Wii U during the system's launch window.

Wasn't it confirmed that the Pro Control is also compatible?

Well, in the US presentation developer used Wii U pro controller.

Or you mean Wii Classic Pro?

By the way, i literally made a fist pump and said yes out loud when they said they are keeping IR pointing in.

You're awesome, Treyarch.

Still not much interested in CoD but at least i won't refuse it outright if it only had dual analog controls.

Updated the article. Thanks.

Very happy with the Wiimote option! I think I will attempt to thoroughly play with the Upad and the Wiimote to see which keeps me more competitive online.

Amazon has a release date of 11/13/12.  So I guess you can get the game before the system and be ready to play the moment you get it home.

Also, according to Amazon, you will be able to use gamepad, wiimote, classic controller pro and Wii U pro controller.  It also looks like you can switch on the fly to the different controllers if you like.

It looks like they changed the Wii U version release date to December 31, 2012.

Glad to hear about the Wii mote controls. I was willing to deal with dual analog in the end because there is a lot of new stuff being done with the game. That or I was going to go with the PC version. However now I have no reason to not get the Wii U version and will be keeping my preorder.

Yeah, the biggest lost promise of the Wii was the lack of wide spread demand/adulation for properly implemented IR controls for shooters. They ruined me for dual analog games on the 360, and I've never felt particularly comfortable using a keyboard and mouse to play games. The IR controls actually friggin' replicate the proposed experience, instead of being totally sloppy (dual analog) or way too twitchy (mouse and keyboard). I kind of doubt it will make it long into the Wii U's lifecycle, particularly as I don't see another Metroid Prime game materializing, but good on Treyarch nonetheless.

I am right there with you guys. One of my personal best I'M-HAPPY-NOW moments of the conference was when they said they were keeping Wii Remote pointer controls.

I will get this game, but it will be my first and last one for 2 or 3 years. I don't know how people can keep picking these up year after year. I like when a heavily competitive multiplayer game is on the market for a few years to develop. You know before a large chunk of those people move on to the next iteration.

How is Halo's multiplayer? Seems like all I ever hear about now is CoD.

What could possibly be better than playing Black Ops II on a Black Wii U?

Killer_Man_JaroTom Malina, Associate Editor (Europe)September 14, 2012

There weren't many details given about the Wii U version of Black Ops II, so it's entirely possible this is a feature, but I hope the GamePad will be used for the Strike Force missions. Those are the missions Treyarch talked about when the game was announced, the ones where you control an entire team of soldiers and can switch between different "units" on the fly. That sounds like it would work perfectly with the GamePad - you could have a bird's-eye map and you tap on the icons to change who you are controlling.
