Fire Emblem: Awakening Coming to North America

The wait is finally over.

Fire Emblem: Awakening is due for a North American release, as reported by Nintendo President Reggie Fils-Aime.

He mistakenly revealed the localization in conversation with Kotaku's Stephen Totilo immediately after the Wednesday 3DS software showcase, and only realized the information wasn't in the press kit afterwards.

No date was revealed about the upcoming title, but its release is now confirmed. The title came out in Japan on April 19 this year.

UPDATE: Nintendo's Twitter and Facebook posted the following confirmation: "We are excited to confirm a NEW game announcement coming to the US: the new 3DS Fire Emblem! More info to come."

Why was this not revealed in the 3DS press conference we just watched (at least, I didn't see it there)?  Or was that one of the titles listed in that final collage of upcoming 3DS titles?  I didn't get a good look at that.

SarailJune 06, 2012

Seriously, they could have at least thrown the logo up there on screen with all of those other games in development.

Nintendo, I guess you really are a company that only makes announcements for games that are 6-8 months from release. This hurts so much these days. I miss the waiting game! o_O

tonoxtonoJune 06, 2012

It was not one of the games in the finale collage

Nintendo's so out of touch with their core fan base they couldn't find a clue with two hands and a road map

So in other words, Reggie didn't mean to announce Fire Emblem for NA right now?

Agree,  Reggie should have been Not Impressed and then Lackey brought out Fire Emblem.

We need more goof-ups like this then. Seriously. Nintendo's absurd silence on games far off in development is getting ridiculous.

xcwarriorJune 06, 2012

Who cares how it was revealed, at least Fire Emblem is coming!

DrizztJune 06, 2012

Yes it's actually coming here! :D

FE13 is hardly "far off in development." But yeah, enough nitpicking. Not dropping a serious bomb like that after the snoozer the 3DS conference was is irredeemable

AVJune 06, 2012

I don't care about this game or franchise, but having it accidentally slip like this and not mentioning it in the event is just a total disrespect to the franchise and everyone who worked on it.

ToraJune 06, 2012

Worst show ever.  Glad Fire Emblem is coming.  Probably will take a while, considering Nintendo is trying to find some decent voice actors.

Btw Was I the only shocked when Reggie said "I don't need a sword to kickass and take names"

achilleswillJune 06, 2012

THANK GOD! this announcment would have saved their 3ds show but im just so happy now

Wait what? Fire Emblem has that big of a fanbase that getting it localized for NA is winning a Press Conference? I thought it was one of Nintendo's more ultra-niche franchises?

oohhboyHong Hang Ho, Staff AlumnusJune 06, 2012

Fire Reggie.

His body is ready.

This bit of info is something new. Nothing at the conference was news. This would have given something for people to chew on for a while. Not as good as rampant speculation about a studio, but it is better than nothing.

Thing is, It would have been an announcement.  Something Nintendo promised yesterday and didn't deliver.  Beside the 3DS market is different than the original DS' and Wii's, Fire Emblem: Kakusei might actually be able to push out about 1.5 Million lifetime sales.  Consider Kid Icarus has already sold half that much in it's first month.  And that was basically a new I.P.

Chocobo_RiderJune 06, 2012

Fire Emblem!

I actually hope it doesn't hit the states 'til all that pesky DLC can be put on the retail copy right away.

HaloEliteLEGENDJune 06, 2012

Reggie Fail.
Good for the fans though.

YmeegodJune 07, 2012

"Fire Emblem: Kakusei might actually be able to push out about 1.5 Million lifetime "

FE is a cult hit and most likely is only going reach 1/2 that.  Right now it's 400k in Japan which means it's going maybe hit the 1/2 million mark which is still pretty damn good for FE.

In the states though it's going be an battle to get 1/4 million sales, anything past that mark is considered great.  And in EU even less (not sure why they would bother with that market since the last couple didn't break 100K mark in that region).

-------------------------------------

Maybe Nintendo will give us the DLC content as a bonus item if we pre-order :) .  Still I'm just happy to get the game at all (I'm looking at you VCIII) so all I need is a freaking DATE.

PaLaDiNJune 07, 2012

I feel like they're going to save Fire Emblem for when there's absolutely nothing else in the pipeline, like Xenoblade.

themaxtrJune 07, 2012

never played a fire emblem game until i got sacred stones with the ambassador program and when i heard that a new one was comeing for 3ds i was so excited i was defnetly planing on a day one prchese but than it never came to NA and i was so disaponted. this just made my day!

This is actually how it got revealed. Reggie asked Stephen what he thought and Stephen kept asking "where's the news?" and then asked where Fire Emblem was and Reggie just says "it's coming." Then there was a moment of confusion as everybody realized what happened. "It was in the press kit, wasn't it?" "No." And then he joked about having to notify his media team and then he was whisked away.

StealthJune 07, 2012

They didnt show it because they only showed 2012 games

Only showing games that we'll be playing soon? DOES NOT COMPUTE!  Where is Last Gaurdian Wii U?!

;)

Bman87301June 07, 2012

If Reggie "confirmed" it by mistake, should we still consider it an actual confirmation? He was clearly confused, so isn't just as likely that he was just mistaking it for another game?

Granted, since we already know it's being localized for Europe, there shouldn't be any reason not to at least release it here as an eShop exclusive... So common sense may say it will definitely be coming-- but the fact that it was specifically kept off the press kit list could still suggest some uncertainty. With that in mind, I'm baffled how everyone seems to be jumping on this as being an official confirmation, when the context hardly makes it 100% credible. Or am I missing something?

Well, NoA tweeted and announced on Facebook that it's coming, so I'd say that's as official as it gets.

I have a hard time believing NOA only has 3 Mario games and 2 eShop Pokémon games for the rest of 2012 on 3DS.  I mean okay, maybe Fire Emblem is 2013 (perhaps the significant DLC lengthening what should be a shorter localization window) but come on.  Where's Animal Crossing?  Where's Layton?  Where's Flipnote?  Where's Dragon Quest?  Where's anything else new really?  Is Mario & Pokémon really it?!

Right after the Fire Emblem confirmation, somebody asked about Animal Crossing, but then the Fire Emblem thing blew up.

Layton is handled by Level-5 now that they have US offices.

themaxtrJune 07, 2012

im new to fire emblem can anybody recommend a ds fire emblem to get before awakening?

Well, 2012 is half over already... Think about it, how many Nintendo-published usually come out in during a 6-month period? The number of games shown are more than reasonable. The reason it seems like a lot less is because this year they chose to only focus on games would be out this year. At the last two E3s Nintendo revealed plenty of new 3DS games which were mostly all far off leaving the 3DS with a huge software drought in between. So, they clearly decided to focus this E3 on immediate releases.

Don't forget, we already know Nintendo is planning to have another event where they'll being revealing the price for Wii U. It's a pretty fair assumption that they plan to unveil their more far off titles at that time, since it's not far off anyway.

Level-5's American branch isn't a full publisher and they've been in place nearly a year now. They still work with American publishers, which is why Nintendo published Layton 4 and Bandai is publishing Ninokuni.

NOE already confirmed they're publishing Layton 5 this year, it makes zero sense for NOA not to be doing the same.

The last time Nintendo had 3 or less retail releases for a system's 2nd half leading up to it's 2nd holiday was Virtual Boy... and that's because they'd already discontinued it. Only 3 games for six months is inexcusable, even Wii last year on it's suppossed death bed had 6 releases in the same span.

There are only 2 FE games on DS, Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon and the Japan-only Fire Emblem: Shin Monshou no Nazo Hikari to Kage no Eiyuu. You might want to stick with the one in English.
