The details are slim, but the news is good.

Wii Virtual Console games will transfer over and be playable on Wii U. In an interview with ABC News, Nintendo Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing Scott Moffitt revealed that users would be able to transfer over their Wii Virtual Console games. These games would retain their original display resolution, as they do on the original Wii.

Moffitt notes that the Nintendo Network will be bringing forth a centralized account system, stating "You will have an individual account based system. Each member of your family might have their own account." He admits that this will require some restructuring of their existing platform.

There was no mention of WiiWare purchases, but the tone of the article seems to indicate that the goal is to avoid having users need to repurchase games, so one could intimate that WiiWare purchases would fall under this same benefit.

Woot! That is all. Now to buy Monster World IV. :D

SarailJune 05, 2012

Oh yeah. Absolutely fantastic to hear! I've got SO many VC and WiiWare titles saved to an SD card in my Wii. Can't wait to transfer them over. Unified account, a go-go, baby!

SonofMrPeanutJune 05, 2012

Can't wait to put this all on my meaty USB memory bank!  :cool;

Well, it's nice to see Nintendo do something right today outside of Pikmin 3.  After today's press conference, it's extremely unlikely that I'll get a Wii U, but if I did this would be a welcome feature.

Oh, man.  I put that purchases would continue to be tied to the system on my bingo card.  Forget the press conferences; I fail E3.

Other than that...I'm very glad to hear this!  I hope it pans out as smoothly as possible, and I can continue failing at Monster World IV for years to come.

I wonder if Nintendo will let me transfer my game saves. That would help me clear up my TV stand.

Can someone ask about Virtual Console games bought and registered to Club Nintendo users but currently not connected to someone's Wii.  If those games can transfer.

TJ SpykeJune 06, 2012

Not surprised by this news, it was pretty much expected. Still nice to have them confirm it though.

This was quite important for me for the following reasons.

18 x NES = £63
27 X SNES = £132.30
10 x N64 = £70.00
8 X Turbo Grafx = £33.60
9 X Mega Drive = £44.10
29 X WiiWare = £203.00
Total = £546.00 (roughly $845.60)

Having spent all this money on digital games I really didn't want to have them languish on my Wii (which I intend on boxing up once I've played Rhythm Heaven Fever, which is released soon in Europe under the name Beat the Beat). I still haven't decided that the Wii U is for me, but if i do, it's reassuring to know that these games will be coming with me.

You may have heard this since you posted, but they said at the developer roundtable that saves can transfer as well as purchased games.

I specifically haven't bought anything from wii ware as I have no rights to the game if I want to play it on another system. And I have most of the games I want already on my old consoles. Why can't Nintendo just do what apple does and allow you to register devices that belong to you. I can register 5 computers and as many iPod touches, iPhones, and iPads as I wan't (I only have an iPod Touch). And if I have to I can unregister all computers or just one. If my iPod is stolen or my computers fry I can re-download all the stuff I paid for from apple for free. I'll loose stuff that wasn't backed up to iCloud and/or other stuff I may have on there like pictures, videos, or stuff I ripped to the computer, but not stuff I actually bought from apple. I know the DRM on wiiware stuff is easy to crack with the home-brew channel, but I'd rather not out of ethical reasons. Just set it up like apple did with their store, you should be able to register your wii or wii's with your nintendo rewards account then connect that with your wii ware account keep track of their downloads and put a system in place that allows you to download or re-download any software you paid for to any systems you own that are compatible with that software.

I don't care about Virtusl console since I can pirate those until the end of days. I'll save the cheering for when they announce that.

Can you put Rare games on the Wii?

OblivionAugust 27, 2012

Yes. It's called the homebrew channel. I'm not paying for Nintendo's shitty overpriced Virtual Console. I have six Bit.Trip games spread over two consoles, World of Goo, Fluidity, and many other WiiWare games that I want on my Wii U so I can sell my two Wii's once and for all.

Do you have Perfect Dark, Goldeneye 007, Conker, etc?

Yes I do, and like it's been said twice, it ain't legal.

Anth0nyAugust 27, 2012

I thought the Virtual Console emulator had to be specifically updated for every new N64 release, which made all Rare games unplayable even via homebrew.
