Pokemon Black and White's director wants to put old and new players on the same level.

Pokemon Black and White, coming out in September in Japan, will feature only new Pokemon until the end, according to Junichi Masuda, the game's director, in a blog post on developer GameFreak's web site (translated via Andriasang).

Masuda explained that he wanted kids and adults to start at the same place in the new game, so everyone could have the sense of discovery with new creatures.

He also shared some quotes from people inside and outside of the company that have played the game that showed that the new pair of games hearken back to the days of Pokemon Red and Blue, as players didn't know what type each Pokemon was and commented on how new it felt.

I think this is what Johnny called for on an episode of RFN.........

Which is a stupid decision in my mind.

For those who don't know, this may also be why they are resetting the route numbers (this game will be starting with Route 1). There are rumors that the game is bases on a region outside of Japan this time (the first four regions were based on real regions of Japan). This is based on the fact that Nintendo has confirmed that Isshu is far away from the other four regions, and that the router numbers are starting over.

I am filled with excite over this game.

It's not ground-breaking, but it's curious enough to get me to actually give a crap about the Black and White information that is being released.

To me, this is like putting a band-aid on a gunshot wound.  I'm all for the main game having completely new Pokemon, but the growing problem with the franchise is that there are just too many of the damn things now.  When you beat Pokemon Black & White, suddenly they're all there again.  I remember back in the Red and Blue days when I could actually name all 151 Pokemon, in numerical order even.  Now there are just so many of the things that they all start to blur together and it's difficult to keep them straight (let alone care about them).  I would have much preferred if Nintendo just wiped the slate clean and let these new Pokemon (+Pikachu, because he's a marketing icon) be the only Pokemon at the moment.

This is exactly what they did with Ruby and Saphire remember? No big deal I say. Make people use the new ones and then let them use their oldies later, I think it's just fine.

About not making any more Pokemon I do understand where you are coming from Broodwars. But people like me who breath Pokemon day and night and do everything we possibly can with the current roster will always want more. We always want that little pokemone who was unusable like Togekiss to get an awesome evolution, like Luvdisc is now. And with so many pokemon and strategies, now no team can prepare for everything which I think is a good thing. And then some people devote so much time to training pokemon I think it is absolutely fantastic that people can keep those hard earned hours and apply them to the next game. That is such a huge reward being a dedicated fan.

brood, getting rid of old Pokemon would be just about the WORST thing they could do to the franchise. No one is forcing you to collect them all, but they shouldn't ruin the franchise just because you want fewer Pokemon. That is like these idiots at the PTC who think they know what is best for families and TV shows.

It's not the whole "collection" aspect that bugs me so much so much as there are seemingly 5,000,000 Pokemon, and in the end most of them feel like the same creature with slightly different stats and a slightly different move list.  The Pokemon don't feel unique like they once did, just minor variations on the same thing.  I get that most Pokemon fans these days long to be Accountants when they grow up, but that just doesn't appeal to me.

CaterkillerMatthew Osborne, Contributing WriterAugust 04, 2010

In RBY there was hardly uniqueness among the pokemon except for how they looked. Just about every Grass pokemon had to be part poison, and they all had the same moves. Seemed like every Rock Pokemon had to be part ground with the same exact moves. Every Ice pokemon had to be part water with the same exact moves. There was allot of that in the early days, they only seemed unique because of how few there were, and when you watch the cartoon you got to see those differences a bit better.

Yes some Pokemon are completely outclassed by others like Golem VS Ryperior, but now Golem has its own little nitch in sucker punch. Along with their abilities, some far more unique than others and some odd typings I say the pokemon are much more unique now than they ever were. People who get overhelmed by the sheer number of them probably shouldn't get the new games at all.

I applaud you for that accountant crack though. Thats good stuff!

I like the idea of starting over. It forces you to experiment with new teams as opposed to looking to recreate past success. I felt I was doing that in DPPt.

What Nick said. This is the first info on B&W that makes me seriously interested in the game. It'll probably still have too many characters for my taste (the Suikoden / Chrono Chross syndrome) but at least the focus will be on new ones. There's no real chance to "even the playing field" between new players and old ones, not unless the whole battle system and all the RPG elements are being totally overhauled. But the focus on new characters should at least make the game feel fresh to all players, and that has been sorely lacking in recent years.

If the game takes place in an entirely new region, it makes sense to do this. There had better be over a 100 new pokemon then.

I am fine with the incredible number of pokemon in the franchise. That is what makes it unique. Everyone's party is going to be different when you go to do battle. Other RPGs have the problem of only having 5-8 characters most of the time to choose from. The combinations are endless, and I love that.

Sure, I don't know all of their names on site, but who cares. Keep the variety coming. And for crying out look GameFreak, give us more Dragon and Fire types!

TJ SpykeAugust 05, 2010

All of the gens take place in new regions (Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, Sinnoh). The only difference is that Isshu is supposed to be pretty far away from the others.

xcwarrior, you might be happy that the new legendary Victini is psychic/fire (and gets the honor of Pokedex number 000).

Pokemon really die'd for me after the GBA versions.
I got Soul Sliver and played it for many an hour. I lost alot of interest over the years.
Now days I hear all this odd talk like EVE-Training and what not. I dont even know what that is.
I'm an old player of Red and Blue so I like the classic stuff. Maybe Black and White will peak my interest. Most likly it wont but I'll stay positive

nickmitchAugust 05, 2010

The thing about EV training is that you don't have to do it unless you wanna compete with fanatics. You can really just play the games like RBY and not worry too much about EVs and natures. That's what I do. I really don't feel like I have the time to carefully do all that and still actually enjoy the game. It sucks the life and fun out of the games for me.

Ditto.

I sunk a combined 150-175 hours into Pearl and SoulSilver. I never dealt with that stuff.

TJ SpykeAugust 05, 2010

Same here. Unless you intend to compete in tournaments or something, you can ignore EVs altogether. They won't make much of a difference against the computer. I know some people love that stuff, but it just seems like homework that I would get in school and I would rather spend that time actually playing the game. I know a lot of people do like it though, and that is why Nintendo keeps it in for those who want it.

Mop it upAugust 07, 2010

One thing which really needs improvement in Pokémon games is the story. I feel there could be something interesting done with the games instead of going "You're a kid, here's the world, go collect all the gym badges." Some of the games briefly talk about the mysteries of Pokémon and their origins, and I think a story centered around studying Pokémon and learning their secrets could be nice.

Also, EV training is one reason that Pokémon is truly a game for everyone. You can play it casually, collecting and training only the Pokémon you want with which to beat the game, or you can learn all about the stats and rigorously raise your team to max levels. It's up to the player whether Pokémon is "casual" or "hardcore."
