Aonuma: 3D Technology is Perfect for Zelda

Eiji Aonuma is excited to bring The Legend of Zelda to 3DS.

In an interview from the latest issue of Official Nintendo Magazine UK, Eiji Aonuma speaks on the possible enhancements that 3D technology could bring to the Ocarina of Time remake for 3DS.

Aonuma states that 3D, in combination with the 3DS's other new elements, are a perfect fit for the Zelda series.  He gives visual depth in riding through vistas and more accurate distance between enemies during combat as examples. In terms of 3D gameplay, he says that integration will be dependent on the effects of a number of factors, such as whether it makes players tired, or causes them to spend long periods of time in front of their systems.

A trailer of the opening sequence to Ocarina of Time for 3DS was shown at the E3 2010 Nintendo Roundtable. The full interview from this month's issue of ONM also goes in-depth about Skyward Sword, and mentions that the game takes place before Ocarina of Time. The magazine is on UK store shelves now.

Talkback

The Ocarina of Time 3D demo didn't impress me. It may partly be that the N64 graphics are so dated compared with what the 3DS can do for new games, but I also didn't think the 3D depth effect was particularly impactful compared to some of the other 3DS demos.

I wish that Nintendo would have offered that enhanced version of Ocarina of Time as a wiiware title. I mean there is no way I am going to pay more than $20 for the 3DS version because the N64 is outdated and I can find the cartridge for like ten dollars in the store and on VC.

WiiWare can't do 3D. Besides, Nintendo added a lot of stuff when they did Super Mario 64 DS. If it wasn't for the fact that 3D platformers don't control well with a d-pad, I would have no problem still recommending it.

I'm sure Nintendo is eager to bring anything to 3DS that will net them a whole lot of money, especially when they don't have to put the resources into actually making a new game.  -_-'

And I'm sure they're eager to make new killer apps to sell the system.  A mix of both would be ideal.

I hope, however, this doesn't mean the end of 2D Zelda.

Meh, Aonuma needs a serious amount of training before he should be allowed to touch Zelda again. That or be hogtied to some tracks while his beloved train runs him over. A man who decides to make the train slower because players were rushing from place to place has no place in game development.

WiiWare can't do 3D.

But 3DSware can.

I don't see a whole lot of meaningful reasoning for this remake or that of Star Fox 64. This will probably see release relatively close to Skyward Sword - a few months later maybe - which makes the project seem redundant to me, but c'est la vie.

FUUUu REEEEEL!

I love both Star Fox64 and Ocarina of Time, but just like Jonny pointed out a while back, the DS launched with N64 titles. To do this again with the 3DS is not "cool", it's backwards. You see what broodwars said? Nintendo is being lazy again.........

Were just eating up the same crap as usual. Nintendo gives us some kind of throwback and we eat it all up because they know that's what we want. That's not what we want it's just something that us Nintendo enthusiasts buy up All the time no matter how many times they offer it to us.

In a minute Nintendo and many other developers will do tho the 3DS, what has been done to movies as of late........ this, that, and the other BUT NOW IN THREEEEEEE DEEEEEEEEEE!!!!

rant over....... it will put lotion on it's body now....

I still don't believe the Star Fox 64 3DS is going to become reality, not after Hideki Kamiya said he wanted to work with Nintendo on a new Star Fox game. That could become something else entirely.

Just hopefully it isn't touched by Q-Games.

you guys don't get it. the reason they're porting the N64 games to the 3DS is symbolic. The N64 was N's step into 3D gaming, the 3DS is N's step into actual 3D gaming. Get it? And I don't think OOT 3D looks like a N64 game at all, it looks much better IMO

KDR_11kJuly 29, 2010

I don't pay money for symbolic gestures.

broodwarsJuly 29, 2010

Indeed.  I think it's rather hypocritical for a company that prides itself on boasting about its innovation to kick off its new "innovative"/gimmick handheld device with ports of two old N64 games, and even more so for anyone who supports their innovation to support these ports.  It's like if Sony were going to release a PSP2 with hologram technology and their launch games were a brand new Sly Cooper Legend of Dragoon followed by ports of Final Fantasy VII and Resident Evil 2 (yes, I know those were 3rd party titles, but I really can't think of a notable Sony PS1 game).  They're great old games to be sure, but when you're launching your new hardware I do expect to see new games from their maker.

i wonder what the internet will say when they re-re-release mario 64 on 3DS with updated visuals. The controls will work really well compared to the DS version. I totally see this be a launch game or possible pack in game with the system.

If everybody here is done being a worrywort filled with mindless nerd rage, they might want to actually look at the games Nintendo has announced for the 3DS and notice precisely 2 out of 9 are "ports" and the rest are new games, either in their series or completely new like Steel Diver.

NERD RAGE
!!!

SNARRRRRRRFF!!111!!1!!one

It's not nerd rage(snort snort), and you could argue that Animal Crossing, Mario Kart, nintendogs + cats, Paper Mario and PilotWings Resort will be very very close to what we have now! (shake shake,ka-chshh!)

(as I look over my horned rimmed glasses at you) I understand that Nintendo rarely comes out the gate with the killer app game for their new systems but that's because they know that most of us are soooo (Ahhhh Chooo!) satisfied with whatever they give us, and now that we will receive 10year+ ports, we jump for joy!

Nah, just kidding Deguello. Your right, but until we get this thing in front of our faces, we'll nit pick it apart. EXCELSIOR!!
