Capcom's new Xbox 360 game debuts slightly ahead of Konami's new DS title.

The past few weeks have been big weeks for game industry sales in Japan, with both Super Mario Galaxy 2 releasing and the Nintendo DS line receiving a price cut. This week is no exception as twelve new games debut in the top 30, with seven of those hitting the top 10.

Debuting in the top spot this week is Capcom’s Monster Hunter Frontier Online for the Xbox 360. With 93,000 units moved, it just barely edged out Konami’s Love Plus + for DS, which opened with sales of 84,000. It is also worth noting that a special edition of the Nintendo DSi was released last week to coincide with the release of Love Plus + , so it is possible that Nintendo DS hardware could experience similarly increased sales like it did last week.

A new Atelier Totori game opens in the third spot with 54,000 copies sold, while Konami’s other new Nintendo DS game, Tokimeki Memorial: Girl’s Side 3rd Story, starts with sales of 52,000.

After regaining the top spot from Xenoblade last week, Super Mario Galaxy 2 slides from first to fifth in its fifth week. Three of those weeks it has been in the top spot, but due to all the new releases this week it slips to a new sales low despite seeing only a 21% dip in sales. Sales of the game currently clock in at 614,000, 155,000 more than the original in the same timeframe. Worth noting is that Super Mario Galaxy started to see a boost in its sales around this time due to the holiday season, so the gap between the two games is likely to decrease significantly over the next few weeks.

Elsewhere in the top ten, three new games for Sony’s platforms occupy positions six through eight, while Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective dips a full seven spots to the ninth position, despite seeing only a 17% decrease in sales. Its lifetime sales stand at 44,000, just 4,000 more than Nintendo’s Art Academy, which was released last week as well. Art Academy also falls seven spots to number ten this week.

Outside the top ten, Xenoblade and Friend Collection both experienced huge falls. The former, which was the fourth best-selling game last week, slips to the fifteenth position, while Friend Collection falls 8-14. It is also worth noting that Friend Collection has been in the top twenty every week since its release last June.

Plenty of other evergreen titles experienced huge falls this week, including Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, and Wii Fit Plus.

The next couple of weeks should be an interesting weeks for sales as well, as Nintendo’s Wii Party is about to hit stores. Whether or not it experiences sales like that of Wii Play remains to be seen.
