The Nintendo of America president talks about the 3D-enhanced successor to the DS.

In an interview with Business Week, Reggie Fils-Aime offered comments regarding the recently confirmed new handheld from Nintendo, the Nintendo 3DS.

Despite having just launched the Nintendo DSi XL in North America, the company is already looking forward to the release of the new handheld.

"We have ideas of what we want to bring to the consumer that we can't do with the current [DS model]. The Nintendo 3DS for us is our next handheld platform," Fils-Aime said.

He went on to call the 3DS "the biggest handheld product since 2004", referring to the launch of the Nintendo DS.

Okay, this is just being cocky! :)

It's almost like saying "this is the greatest lunch I've had since yesterday."

The DS is a smash success.  No one can deny that.

Nintendo isn't going to come out with a successor unless they *know* it will be huge.

I just hope it has more to offer than simply 3D, but I guess we'll find out as E3.

Nintendo isn't new to overlapping and definitely not new to the handheld market. The average DS purchaser has no clue about this announcement, any of us on this site or the type of people that tracks this type of stuff are far from average.

The #1 concern of Nintendo is the Japanese market and this hand held will do GANGBUSTERS in JP because after the re-stagger the pricing, because this will not be over $199, and the rest of the world, about the 20 to 30 million people that make up most of their profit share, will have to have the NEW NEW.......

Well, I'm sure he was referring to the PSP, too.

Besides, I think we can all agree that the Nintendo DSi XL is the biggest handheld product since 2004.  ;)
