DSi LL Launches in Japan

The new super-sized handheld is available for purchase in the Nintendo homeland.

DSi LL, the newest and largest handheld from Nintendo, launched yesterday in Japan to long lines of eager shoppers.

The handheld is the fourth iteration of the incredibly popular DS hardware. Reports at Famitsu.com estimated lines of 50 to 60 people had formed at the Yodobashi Camera Multimedia chain in Akihabara, Japan by 9 a.m. Other details from Famitsu.com indicated that the most popular color for the handheld varied by location, and was either Wine Red or Dark Brown.

According to a survey of those in line, it seemed as if most of the users were upgrading from either the original DS or the DS Lite. The system was mostly picked up by itself, without additional games or accessories. There seemed to be enough stock, and sellouts were not a concern.

DSi LL will launch in Europe and North America as DSi XL during Q1 of 2010.

Why must Nintendo do this to the weak, loyal consumers.

any confirmation if the screen resolution is the same or if they decided to really improve it ?

Do what?  Nintendo's primary customers, the Gamer Grandmas, are happily supporting this release.

Keep in mind that this isn't a replacement for the DSi, it's an alternative.  For many/most people the LL will simply be too big (it's really big compared to the ordinary DSi).

Also, I think frankly the bigger screen doesn't look as good:  besides the bigger and more obvious pixels, the LL displays I saw seemed to flicker in a way that the DSi doesn't (I'm not totally sure exactly what the problem is, but that's the sense I got).

So for someone with bad eyesight, it's a great product, but I don't think it's for everyone.

The number of pixels seems to be exactly the same, they're just bigger.

I'm curious what the weight on this thing is? I had enough trouble holding the DS Lite with one hand...

It's much heavier. There were stats listed in one thread about it, I think it was over 300 grams.

Thank you. It must be difficult to use it with the stylus...

That's awesome.  I bet it's like holding a VCR with one hand and feeding it cassette tapes with the other.
