A ton of new information about Guitar Hero 5 was recently unveiled including the release date, names of many of the musicians providing songs, and the ability to play a single song with four different drum sets simultaneously.

Activision revealed on the Guitar Hero 5 official website that the upcoming rhythm game is debuting on September 1, which is about a week before MTV Games and Harmonix's The Beatles: Rock Band. The site also provided new information on the gameplay and some of the 85 bands participating.

One of the cool new features in the upcoming game is that players can use any possible combination of instruments when playing songs. That means if multiple people want to sing or play the drums at the same time, they have that option. In addition, if the bass guitarist has to leave abrutly, they can easily drop out of the game without stopping the action.

Here is a list of the known songs and musicians in the upcoming Guitar Hero sequel compiled from Shacknews, Yahoo Music, IGN, and Gamespot:

  • Johnny Cash - "Ring of Fire"
  • Stevie Wonder - "Superstition"
  • Kings of Leon - "Sex on Fire"
  • Bob Dylan - "All Along the Watchtower"
  • Santana - "No One To Depend On (Live)"
  • The Rolling Stones - "Sympathy for the Devil"
  • The White Stripes - "Blue Orchid"
  • Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - "Runnin' Down a Dream"
  • Vampire Weekend - "A-Punk"
  • Beastie Boys
  • Coldplay
  • Bush
  • Smashing Pumpkins
  • David Bowie
  • Mötley Crüe
  • Attack! Attack!
  • Dire Straits
  • The Derek Trucks Band
  • Sublime
  • Darkest Hour
  • Iron Maiden
  • KISS
  • Wild Cherry
  • Muse
  • Band of Horses
  • The Raconteurs
  • Blink-182
  • Blur
  • Duran Duran
  • Gorillaz
  • Jimmy Eat World

Four different what!? C'mon the suspense is killing me!! why are you keeping secrets!!?

different drum sets simultaneously. Thanks.

Derek Trucks is ridiculously awesome addition. This is shaping up to be the most interesting music game setlists yet.

I'm still waiting to hear whether or not this new game will somehow facilitate the importing of old Guitar Hero World Tour songs via an SD card, a la Rock Band.

If that feature isn't there I may jump ship and move do 360 as my platform of choice for music party games.

I'm pretty sure they confirmed importing the World Tour set list songs and some downloadable content.

As much as I prefer Rock Band, this set list is looking to be really solid and varied.

I think World Tour had some problems out of the gate (check my review for my issues with it), but I'm impressed that the various developers seem to be correcting them over time. I was really happy with the addition of the star counter in Metallica.

They confirmed World Tour DLC is compatible with it, not actual disc songs that I have read.

Vampire Weekend with "A-Punk"? YESS! and blur's song is gonna be Song 2, unless Activision wants to show what they are really like. This tracklist looks good so far
