Mega Man makes his Virtual Console debut with the first title in the series and he is accompanied by Gameloft's Midnight Pool for WiiWare and Neo Turf Masters for the Neo Geo.

This Week's Virtual Console and WiiWare provides a timeless NES classic, Mega Man, along with a brand new WiiWare offering, Midnight Pool, and the highly regarded golf game for the Neo Geo, Neo Turf Masters.

Midnight Pool, the sole WiiWare release, takes players on a trip across America to the most colorful bars for a circuit pool tournament. Players will be able to play the fundamental pool game as well as try their hand at trick shots once they have mastered the basics. Midnight Pool is rated E for Everyone by the ESRB and is available now on the Wii Shop Channel for 800 Wii Points.

This week's headliner release, Mega Man for the NES, puts players in control of the Blue Bomber who is on a mission to defeat the six robot masters created by Dr. Wily. Players will gain the powers of each robot master when they defeat them and will be able to take use of those powers in future battles. Mega Man is rated E for Everyone by the ESRB and is available now on the Wii Shop Channel for 500 Wii Points.

Last but not least, Neo Turf Masters for the Neo Geo finishes off the week. The golf title allows players to choose one of six golfers who can play on a number of courses across the world. Players can play alone for the best score or against a friend in match play, also shooting for the lowest score. Gamers who don't already own the title through the recently released SNK Collection Volume 1 can grab the E rated title now through the Wii Shop Channel for 900 Wii Points.

WII-KLY UPDATE: ONE WIIWARE GAME AND TWO VIRTUAL CONSOLE GAMES ADDED TO WII SHOP CHANNEL

Aug. 18, 2008 - Fans of '80s platforming action have something to shout about this week-namely, the Virtual Console debut of a true classic: Mega Man. Whether you're experiencing this vintage robot adventure for the first time or reliving the fun of your NES® heyday, you'll find all of the game's side-scrolling thrills intact. Meanwhile, players with a passion for sinking the perfect shot can rule the table with a new WiiWare pool title or conquer the links in a challenging, globetrotting golf game.

Nintendo adds new and classic games to the Wii Shop Channel at 9 a.m. Pacific time every Monday. Wii owners with a high-speed Internet connection can redeem Wii Points to download the games. Wii Points can be purchased in the Wii Shop Channel or at retail outlets. This week's new games are:

WiiWare

Midnight Pool (Gameloft, 1-2 players, Rated E for Everyone-Mild Suggestive Themes, Simulated Gambling, 800 Wii Points): Take a trip across America to make your dreams come true in a pool tournament worth millions. Visit the most colorful bars and meet seven of the coolest players on the circuit, from country music star Travis to Alison the biologist and John the sheriff. Learn the tricks of the trade through tutorials along the way, while advanced players can take on challenges to show off their trick-shot abilities. Keep things interesting with three sets of rules.

Virtual Console

Mega Man (NES, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone-Mild Cartoon Violence, 500 Wii Points): Join the blue bomber in his first-ever adventure as he battles the evil Dr. Wily and his robotic henchmen to restore peace to a troubled world. Mega Man is a super-robot created by the genius scientist Dr. Light. When Dr. Wily goes rogue with an army of six of his own devious robot masters, it's up to Mega Man to put a stop to his nefarious plot by traversing a series of stages rife with enemies, traps and perilous platform challenges. At the end of each stage, conquer one of the robot masters and claim his weapon as your own, using it to your advantage in subsequent fights.

NEO TURF MASTERS (NEOGEO, 1-2 players, Rated E for Everyone, 900 Wii Points): This is a golf game that was first released in 1996. The player picks one of six available golfers and competes on a number of golf courses around the world, including Japan (Fujiyama Oriental Golf Club), America (Grand Canyon Golf Course), Australia (Blue Lagoon Golf Course) and Germany (Baden Golf Course). The game features two modes of play. The first is Stroke Play, in which the player attempts to get the best score by playing all 18 holes. The second is Match Play, in which two players compete to see who can win more of the 18 holes. Grab a friend and get ready to hit the fairway.

Talkback

i'm in the dorm now and I can't download VC or Wiiware games or connect online for gaming.

So I would of downloaded Mega Man but I can't.
Stupid Nintendo Summer is the time I can play the most videogames and download the most from Shopping channel and now they are screwed.

Anyway I have 0 interest in Neo Turf Masters and that Wiiware game might have potential but so far that I know billiards doesn't play well on Wii.

GoldenPhoenixAugust 18, 2008

Pool games not working well on Wii? I thought Pool on Wii Play played quite well.

NinGurl69 *hugglesAugust 18, 2008

Wii Pool worked if your Remote had a clear view of the Sensor Bar, directly in front of the telly.  Playing with a group with people at varying angles to the TV, the game falls apart since it doesn't alert the average user to that technicality

There's a technical reason for that, and for once, I actually know a good deal about it.  We'll be talking about it on RFN this week.

Mega Man is a nice addition to Virtual Console, in that it's recognizable and good, but many people probably haven't played the original.  It's also a good bit different than the rest of the series, though not necessarily in a good way.  Just be warned that it is BRUTAL.  If you're not super curious about this one, just wait for MM2 because it's superior in every way.  I still think Mega Man 1 is a good value for five bucks and is worth playing for fans of the series.

OR, you could just find the Anniversary Collection and play the entire original Mega Man series (aside from Mega Man & Bass) for less than $30. Probably less than $20 by now, but it's tough to find.

Mett is right--Mega Man 1 is a brutal, unforgiving game. I've played it and beat it on three different systems, and it's one of the few games that never gets any easier.

Ian SaneAugust 18, 2008

The Anniversary Collection has stupid reversed controls though.

Did you get my mailbag question about this? it's very cool that I emailed that you last night and this game released this week so its totally on topic.

Amazingly stupid reversed controls.

If you're really desparate, pick up one of the Wi-Fi USB Connectors. It works for me at school as long as you have a computer near your Wii.

I bought it yesterday and beat five of the six first bosses in a couple of hours.  It's my first time playing the game in years, so while parts of it are vaguely familiar, I don't remember any specifics (like boss order, etc.).

I completely disagree with Jonny about its being different than the rest of the series.  I'm actually quite shocked by how similar it is to the other games.  All of the core mechanics are present in this game except for the slide (which is largely unnecessary) and the Mega-Buster (which breaks the later games).  It's nowhere near as pretty as the later NES games, but it's still tons of fun to play.

The difficulty level is certainly higher than the later games, but it's still nowhere near as impossible as Jonny makes it seem.  (In fairness, I haven't gotten to Wily's castle yet, so maybe I'll change my mind after the Yellow Devil kicks my ass a few times.)

CalibanAugust 19, 2008

I've played Megaman on VC for my first time ever.
Today I've unlocked Dr.Wily's level, and played into it for a bit and I think it is a bit more challenging than the prior 6 levels.
I thought it was funny, yet it makes sense that you can easily defeat Elecman with Cutman's power.
I thought it was wierd that using fire would be easy against Iceman, which it wasn't, but nonetheless electricity works wonders.
I think my order was: Bombman, Cutman, Elecman, Fireman, Gutsman, Iceman.
If this game is one of the hardest Megaman games for NES than I shouldn't have much of a problem with Megaman 2 either, nor Megaman 9, but hopefully that turns out to not be the case.

vuduAugust 19, 2008

When you play Mega Man 2, be sure to play at the DIFFICULT setting.  NORMAL is the wussy version created especially for fat, lazy Americans.  DIFFICULT is the way it was meant to be played.

KDR_11kAugust 19, 2008

Yeah, normal is a pushover.

Especially if your only experience with classic Megaman is Dr. Wily's Revenge for the GB... "What, I managed to defeat a robot master? Without hours of perfecting the level???"

I think the progression is rock blunts scissor, scissor cuts electric wires, electricity is conducted by water and ice, water and ice extinguish the flame, flames detonate explosives and explosives destroy the rock. In the GB version it was fire melts the scissor BTW.

I see. Thanks KDR.

Oh, hell, Mega Man: Dr. Wily's Revenge on the GB was a giant mallet of a game that required the utmost precision to beat. Took me a looooong time to beat that game when I was little. Dr. Wily especially was a devil, because he could only be hurt by one weapon, and his weak point was incredibly small and required pinpoint accuracy. And the disappearing blocks in his space station? God, I thought Ice Man's stage in the NES original was tough. It was easy by comparison.

On the other hand, Mega Man 2 on the GB is one of easiest Mega Man games ever made. I can beat that game in about a half hour.

I really hope that Capcom continues the Powered UP series on the PSP, because the first game was just so damn good. Besides, I'd like to see their character designs for the MM2 bosses.

Ian SaneAugust 19, 2008

I like how in the first game the progression of bosses makes sense.  Later they have guys like Pharoah Man, Skull Man, Centaur Man.  Come on!  How the hell is anyone supposed to come to a logical conclusion of what order to go in without random guessing?

Yeah because electricity is used quite often to melt ice, fire is the anti-bomb destroyer, and electricity is weak to um scissors. Really it made MORE sense as the series went on, at least when it comes to the items you get.

Yeah and it still was a reach. Seriously what is more "logical" when you are play electricity melting ice, or fire? If we want to go by goofy situations like "scissors cut electric wire" why can't "scissors cut fuse on bomb". The ones that actually made sense were the rock over scissors and fire susceptible to ice. Even rock over scissors could have been different, like metal (scissors) being a conductor of electricity. Anyway this is a dumb argument ;). All I will say is I'm not a big fan of MM1 and MM3 RULES.

Real men use the arm cannon for everything.  (Except Cut Man still need to be killed with Guts Man's power, because he's a bitch and a half otherwise.)

I beat Cutman with the arm cannon.

You are more of a man than I.

CalibanAugust 20, 2008

I didn't mean for it to come out that way. I'm absolutely sure you can do it too, and I'm even more sure that there are harder NES games out there that you have played that could kick Megaman 1's ass out of this planet.

Like Battletoads ::shudders::

Battletoads is great, a friend of mine and I played the hell out of it on his brother's NES. We never got past the second or third level but we loved it.

You just explained why everyone else hates it.  When a game is so ridiculously hard that you can't even get pasted the first few levels, that's not fun.  The bike levels are the cheapest levels in videogame history.  They're all way to long and require you to be pixel perfect in everything you do.  Not to mention the entire game itself was way too long and only gave you 3 f*cking continues and no save or password feature.  Because of this it was completely impossible for anyone to beat without using a Game Genie.

In other words, Battletoads difficulty makes Megaman 1 look like Wind Waker.

KDR_11kAugust 20, 2008

The least likely candidate for the arm buster I can think of is Elecman in the GB version. Let's see... Lightning that goes 3-4 blocks high and a jump height of 2 blocks...

I had one of those things a while back and the stupid think broke on me. For no reason too, I got a refund and never looked back.

I also have a mac so those things only work on PC.

And the dorm strongly hates use of any 3rd party attachments to the Wifi network.

So I can't win. Oh well every once in a while when I visit my mom I'll take the wii over and download some games using that online.

Considering how hot mine gets, I imagine it melted.  Nintendo probably discontinued them out of fear of setting their customers on fire.

Yeah I would never say it is a bad game, just horribly balanced in difficulty. There is challenging and then there is a cheap and it gets cheap later on. Though it is a blast until those points.

Kudu has the best avatar on the entire forums. Don't question it--accept it.

Now then, Battletoads seriously made me weep. I was able to get as far as the "outrace a giant spinning orb" stage, but the orb always caught up to me. Insta-kill! I'm not even sure you CAN beat that level without a cheat device. The game was fun as hell until that point, though. There's something to be said for tough-as-nails games that require memorization and precision to get through. I've always hoped that either Battletoads or Battlemaniacs would hit the Virtual Console...

*shrugs* Mine works fine.
Except there was as instance where it stopped working because there was interference. I looked up the error code and it said something like: "Remove large metal objects such as a filing cabinet." Sure enough, my roommate's filing cabinet was in the way.

Uh, no, that's actually Brock Sampson from "The Venture Bros."

vuduAugust 20, 2008

I'm fully aware of who Brock Sampson is.  I just don't have the faintest idea who Kudu is.  My best (and only) guess was a misspelling of my user name.

It was. Are you saying Brock is in the Mafia game? That would rock, although I'm assuming you have permission to use his likeness.

It's roll-playing, baby!  The theme for this game is Secret Agents.

Seriously though, you should join.  Sign-ups end today, so be quick about it.

I don't have the time these days, but it sounds awesome.
