Wii Sports at the Oscars

Miis return to the Kodak Theatre.

Wii fans everywhere must have smiled tonight as Jon Stewart and Jamia Nash, a young

singer from the film August Rush, spent a few seconds volleying

the tennis ball in Wii Sports, projected on a huge screen at the 80th

Academy Awards. Stewart wrapped up the game and returned to his hosting

duties by questioning whether he should be out of breath from playing

the game.

This is not the first time Wii Sports has been played at the Kodak

Theatre. The famed venue was also host to Nintendo's E3 2006 press

conference, where Wii and its launch games were first officially

revealed to the world. Nintendo World Report staff members, along with

hundreds of other members of the press and the gaming industry, sat in

the very same seats filled by the most famous actors and filmmakers in

the world during this year's Oscars event. Hundreds of millions of

movie fans around the world were expected to tune into this year's

broadcast, making this one of Nintendo's most ambitious and far-reaching

marketing opportunities ever.

With the 'writers' strike over, I honestly expected a urine based joke or something.

"I'm playing Wii Tennis!"
"Don't piss away your time!"

*Crowd bursts into laughter*

"Make sure to catch the next season of Dharma and Greg!"

Everytime I see the Kodak Theatre on TV (including the CNN debates) I tell my friends that I've been there. They are tired of hearing about it.

Wow... that show ended more than 5 years ago. That's like a million years in internet time.

I was present at the press conference where Nintendo debuted Super Smash Bros. Melee and Pikmin.

You know, back when Nintendo was pure and still cared.

I hate to sound like a fanboy but when I saw John Stewart and the chorus girl I was like "WTF???", then a big grin appeared. It caught me by surprise.

The iPhone skit I kinda expected because its a device that plays movies and everyone, including celebrities, own or want one. But the Wii? I knew the Wii and Wii Sports had appeal, but strong enough to be referenced and SHOWN at an event as big as the Oscars?

And yeah, I too noticed the ties between the Wii and the Oscar stage. Its almost like destiny! :p
