Update: New website automates the process to make things easier.

Update:

Activision has opened up a website allowing customers to pre-register for replacement Guitar Hero 3 discs, which can be found here.

Previously, gamers had to call Activision customer support in order to get registered for the program, which promises to replace, free of charge, Wii Guitar Hero 3 discs that don't play stereo or Dolby surround sound. Although no more specific timeframe than "early 2008" is provided, customers who pre-register will be sent an e-mail when more information is available.

Orginal Story:

Last year's hit game Guitar Hero 3 allowed gamers everywhere to rock out in their living room. Unfortunately, it was soon discovered that the Wii version of this game had a bug that prevented it from playing surround or even stereo sound. In order to fix the situation, Activision promised to send out free replacement discs sometime early in 2008.

The replacement discs haven't arrived just yet, but Activision has started to allow customers in North America to pre-register for the program. A support page on the Activision website reads:

"We recently became aware that some consumers have not been able to enjoy the full audio output in the Wii version of Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock. We are currently working with Nintendo and are planning to issue an improved audio experience in future versions of the game. We expect to have re-mastered discs available by early 2008 and we will be offering consumers replacement discs at no cost once they become available. Should you have any further inquiries, please contact Activision customer support at http://www.activision.com/support. Customers based in North America wanting to pre-register for a free replacement disc can call (866) 780-8286 from 8:00am-8:00pm EST, Monday-Friday, and we will notify you once the replacement discs are available. We thank all of our customers for their support and patience."

Callers will be asked to provide their name, address, phone number, and e-mail so that Activision can contact them with more information about the Guitar Hero 3 replacement disc program when it becomes available.

Thanks to drw213 for the pre-registration website tip!

CENSORED FOR YOUR PROTECTION

Yeah, I'm not going to bother with this, as the mono sound hasn't bothered me at all, unless they make other changes (like say the Co-Op Quick Play they somehow managed to be stupid enough to leave out of the shipped versions). I would also love to get the songs from 1 & 2, and another guitar.

Yeah... Activision has GOTTA start executing better, or else Rock Band is going to steal their market from right under them.

What's the word on when stores will start getting the up-to-date versions on store shelves, so those of us holding out can buy one in the store instead of shipping it off

Well... considering there's no announced timetable for even the replacement discs themselves...
