High sales for Capcom's Wii titles fuel growth spurt; company doubles number of planned releases for the console.

Japanese publisher Capcom has seen its stock grow by a considerable amount this year, climbing 6.3% to 2,855 Yen ($25.10), a five year high for the company. Over the past few days alone, the company's shares have risen by a total of 14%, with a year-to-date increase of 33%.

Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition was among the top 10 titles sold in the U.S. and Japan in June, and continues to surpass Capcom's sales expectations.Due to this, Capcom has doubled the games scheduled for release on the Wii, now set to release a total of 6 games on Nintendo's seventh generation home console. "Resident Evil's Wii edition has continued to sell well," said Jay Defibaugh, an analyst at Credit Suisse Group in Tokyo who rates Capcom shares. The analyst goes on to say that he expects the game to exceed its shipment expectation of 620,000 units for this fiscal year.

Their support is still weak as hell.. I want some real support, Capcom.

GoldenPhoenixSeptember 12, 2007

Obvious lies, Capcom themselves said that mature games won't sell for Wii.

God Capcom TAKE A HINT why don't ya?!?!?!

KDR_11kSeptember 12, 2007

Doubled to six games... Geez, they need a clue already. I bet the three new ones are just emergency ports, too. Wiimote FPS Megaman plz kthxbye.

KDR, they didn't announce anything new. They're merely saying that soon, they'll have six games on the Wii total. The text here is misleading.

Bloomberg says
The company, whose ``Resident Evil'' action game was among the top 10 titles sold in Japan and the U.S. in June, expects annual sales to rise 11 percent as it doubles the number of Wii titles to six.

and IGN counts:
Capcom is set to publish Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles, Zack & Wiki: Quest for Barbaros' Treasure and Harvey Birdman in America later this year. The company has also announced the Camelot-developed sports game We Love Golf and Devil Kings 2 for Wii. All of these titles in addition to the already-released Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition makes six, and we expect more games to follow.

More games to follow? NO WAI, BATMAN!

This is still good news - turns out third party games do sell on Wii after all.

Well, it shows that RE4 on the Wii sells well. The fact that 90% of games on the Wii at the moment are 3rd party also tells us that Nintendo is encouraging 3rd party sales by leaving a drought of their own games. This must make Kairon happy.

As I've said before: Okami, pls.

MashiroSeptember 13, 2007

"Man Wii has some real potential, lets push ourselves to make another RE4 like titles (hint hint: RE5 for Wii) and see how it does!"

Capcom, you should be thinking that RIGHT NOW.

(IF Capcom DOES NOT act on this it will just irritare the hell out of me and question third parties as to what the hell they expect from the Wii outside of phenomenal sales of their games and loads of money.)

It's better than it was, but it's still pretty similar to how Ubisoft was using the money made from sales of Wii games to finance PS360 games...

Not sure where he read that, but I've heard the same thing which seems so stupid. If you are making good money off the Wii, why not invest that money back into bigger budgets to make even more money!

Smash_BrotherSeptember 13, 2007

Not sure, I just remember hearing it somewhere.

The best reasoning I can think of beyond "screw Nintendo over for no reason" is that Wii games take no effort to sell so there's no point increasing their budget. PS3 and Xbox 360 games require more effort to sell so to ensure success on all three consoles Wii profits are used for PS3/X360 development. Sh!t that almost sounds like a sound business strategy in a "stupid ideas are good ideas" kind of way. face-icon-small-wink.gif

I really hope Capcom gives us Resident Evil 5. Resident Evil 4 has already been available on two other consoles for a couple years now. A lot of people have PS2s so they could have got it there. The Cube version is even playable on the Wii so someone could just buy it used for cheap if they don't mind missing out on the extra content. Despite this the Wii version is selling really well. How well did the Dreamcast and Cube ports of Resident Evil 2 & 3 do in comparison or the PS2 and Cube ports of Code Veronica? Surely this is a sign that there's a market here for Resident Evil.

Though I suppose the hardware difference could screw things up, regardless of sales. If they're designing it to make full use of the X360 or PS3 hardware a non-gimped Wii version just might not be possible.

Ian, you've gone on and on about how you want mature, exclusive third party support, preferably with a new IP. But then, when Capcom reinvents the RE series to make one of the best games in the franchise, on the GAMECUBE, you don't buy it, saying that "I was never into Resident Evil". And now you want RE5 on the Wii. Will you play it?

Perhaps because PS360 games are so expensive you need all the resources your company has?

Maybe, but there is a chance you can make even better profits on Wii, which is really what it is all about.

I want good support from Capcom. Getting RE5 would signify that. Even if I don't buy it I want Capcom to treat the Wii as the market leader deserves. The Wii should be their main target platform. Instead of RE5 I'll just say "I hope this results in better support from Capcom".
