Ike from Fire Emblem joins the fray!

Today the official Super Smash Bros. Brawl website revealed the first brand new character coming to the revered fighting game series. That new character is Ike, of the Fire Emblem series. Like his predecessors Marth and Roy, Ike wields a sword. Ike's sword is two-handed, though he only holds it with one because he's such a strong dude. In fact, Ike's so buff that he can preform a "single-stroke finishing blow" with the blade. In addition to his sword, Ike also brings his special move, "Aether".

Hello Marth.... err Ike

StrikerObiMike Sklens, Podcast EditorAugust 01, 2007

He sounds more like Roy to me, more of a heavy hitter. Actually, in my opinion, this sort of confirms that Marth and Roy WON'T be returning for Brawl. There's no way they would put THREE Fire Emblem characters in the game... maybe two. If they have two, the other will be Marth. Roy was just a stronger/slower clone of Marth for the most part, there's no reason to keep him when he can be replaced with a different strong/slow character from the same series.

I dunno - Ike looks way too much like Marth for both of them to be in the game. If they put another Fire Emblem character in there, it'll likely be Sothe from Goddess of Dawn (and originally a supporting character in Path of Radiance alongside Ike).

personally, marth and roy were the same crap. i did enjoy the defensive special where if you get hit, you counter it 100% of the time. id rather there only be one of these sword guys in it. im just waiting for them to announce jigglypuff. she was my beeeotch!

Am I the only one who would rather see one of the massive badasses from FE for a second character?

But yeah, I'm going to guess Marth is OUT, unless he's a costume now.

"Am I the only one who would rather see one of the massive badasses from FE for a second character?"

Yes, Lyn please...

The whole "WARNING! CHALLENGER APPROACHING!" makes it seem obvious that Ike is unlockable, but I guess we'll see...

I woke up around Japan Time and to my suprise, Ike was a new character! Then I went back to sleep. Anyways, this seems to be the answer for Marth and Roy users. I'm a bit sad that Siglud wasn't on there. Would of been nice. However, Sakurai did said less Japan only. Someone from Goddess of Dawn has to be there. Bet it's a female because Sakurai wants more females.

I don't think so Bill. Based on Melee, Ninty will probably do everything in their power to keep the unlockables a secret until launch.

Bill AurionAugust 01, 2007

Then they shouldn't be so confusing and just use "NEWCOMER!" >=|

LuigiHannAugust 01, 2007

Marth and Roy were both unlockables in Melee, so...

CericAugust 01, 2007

They did put him under Newcomer in the Character section. I actually had to go to the front page to figure out what you were talking about. (I get them from the RSS feed and they link direct.)

MashiroAugust 01, 2007

So what's the difference between Marth and Ike? they both seem relatively the same design wise.

Nice character model though, happy to see a "new" character revealed =)

miedoAugust 01, 2007

They need the Black Knight to counter him. Hector would be fun too. I'd hate to see Ephraim, Eirika, or Lyn though. Bunch of pansies.

Well obviously he's a newcomer, but I mean they shouldn't confuse us by making it look like he's an unlockable if he's really not (since you won't be seeing the CHALLENGER APPROACHING sign if you don't have to unlock him...)

Marth is from the original FE; Ike is from FE9 and FE10.

MashiroAugust 01, 2007

yeah on my first site view the "new challenger approching!" thing didn't appear but now it does . . .

weird. It would be strange to already reveal "locked" characters.

Smash_BrotherAugust 01, 2007

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that he would reveal all of the secret characters on this website over time, but I can't confirm that.

I'd guess that Ike will be locked at the start, but that could be wrong. He might have included the "challenger approaching" banner because people won't be seeing it normally if they DON'T unlock Ike.

Luigi DudeAugust 01, 2007

I'm pretty sure Ike will be playable from the start. Sakurai probably put the Challenger Approaching sign there because this is the first new character we've seen since E3 2006. In other words, it was just Sakurai being funny on the main page, because if you look at Ike's character page the sign isn't there at all.

EnnerAugust 01, 2007

<3 Sakurai-translated oddities. I didn't get to see the warning at first either since I use the RSS feed as well.

I can't wait to see what Ike's Aether looks like.
