Virtual Console May Bring JPN Games to U.S.

According to Nintendo exec George Harrison, Japan-only games might eventually be translated and released in America through Virtual Console.

Chris Kohler of Wired's Game|Life blog has extracted this juicy quote from George Harrison, senior vice-president at Nintendo of America:

We are aware that there are some very successful Japanese franchises that have a small following in the US, and that they could never be reached by putting these products out at retail. We're open to games released in Japan if we can get them translated properly.

Aside from cult classics like Mother (predecessor to Earthbound) and the original Fire Emblem games, many English-speaking Nintendo fans have long pined for Treasure's N64 shooter Sin & Punishment, which is already planned for release on the Japanese Virtual Console service. With the storyline already dubbed in English, could this be the first import-only game to get an official VC distribution in the West?

Talkback

Ian SaneFebruary 15, 2007

God, I hope this actually happens. Who knows if it will but at least someone at Nintendo is talking about it.

JonLeungFebruary 15, 2007

Only one comment so far, and it's a positive one from Ian?

Then again, this really can't be bad news.

Nick DiMolaNick DiMola, Staff AlumnusFebruary 15, 2007

Great news, hope it becomes a realized situation. I know I'd buy Sin & Punishment in an instant, as well as anything else I couldn't officially play before.

StrellFebruary 15, 2007

Fine. Bring me Sin and Punishment and/or Mother 3 - You find a way to emulate it on the SNES since it looks exactly like Mother 2.

Until then stfu Nintendo, I can't take these mind games.

DunnymeisterFebruary 15, 2007

I wonder how NAL would treat these games? We don't get Turbografx games here in Oz, so I find it unlikely that we'd receive a PAL treatment of these games.

DjunknownFebruary 15, 2007

Harrison is far, far more trustworthy than Kaplan, so we the fact that at the high level are considering it is a positive thing.

But the keyword is may. Until then, I'll just assume its just pie in the sky...

I swear, Mother 3 is brought up just to make me cry! ;_;

Well, we'll if anything we mey just get the original Mother.

I want the old Fire Emblem games, you know the one that actually has Marth in it (Roy was in a GBA game so I'm not getting my hopes up).

I find this suprising considering it's the same nintendo that releases VC games without anything added (I don't mind that nothing's changed but lots of people seem to bitch about it) Could this mean they'll actually put effort into there VC games?!

I'm sorry but he name "Sin & Punishment" Just sounds so F*cken awsome.

LouieturkeyFebruary 15, 2007

If this happens, I may actually start using the VC finally. I'm hoping SE jumps on something like this as there were a bunch of their SNES games that never made it here. Plus I also want to see Terranigma come out here. I believe there is a Freak around here who would like it as well.

Illusion of Gaia is better than Terranigma. But then, it's better than most games, so that's no knock to Terranigma. I'm just saying, the U.S. already has the best of that series.

KDR_11kFebruary 15, 2007

Tomorrow NoE will go on the record saying that this isn't true and that there are no plans to bring games from other regions on the VC.

WPack911February 15, 2007

This so needs to happen and Nintendo knows it, they do this a that is just more awesome press and good feelings by all for Nintendo. Really only fanboys could hate Nintendo now after how awesome they have made the Wii and DS.

I have my doubts that it'll ever happen considering that Nintendo's attitude about VC so far has been purism, to the point of no rumble or memory card features (can't mess with that code, it's too fragile). Translations of holy grail Jap-only titles? So far Nintendo has done zero advertising for new VC titles outside of weekly press releases - even I don't think they can maximize return on multiple translation efforts for fan-service giveaways. But I'm not going to stop hoping.

Taking out the power codes in Kid Icarus says different from this purism you are speaking of face-icon-small-smile.gif.

SvevanEvan Burchfield, Staff AlumnusFebruary 15, 2007

Good point. Nintendo is willing to fiddle with the code when it screws the user, but not when it helps them (rumble, ghost data).

q33February 15, 2007

They took out the special passwords in Kid Icarus? Boo.

Why is everybody so intent on the ghosts in Mario Kart? If you played the game back in the N64 days, you'd know that saving that data sucked royally. Not only did the data use up 121 of the possible 123 pages of the N64 memory card, but if the race took too long (or if you hit too many obstacles, or if you simply paused the game) you couldn't save the data anyway. Nintendo is saving you grief, people. Let the ghosts go.

I heard Harrison make a similar comment quite awhile ago, so I’d imagine it’s not only a possibility; I’d guess translations could very well be underway now. Sin & Punishment is the obvious first choice because of the heavy amount of English already in it (just menus and the end are the big things that need translating) but it’s exciting to hear more talk of this. Fire Emblem games could also be a big one—I actually thought of them before thinking of S&P for some odd reason. It’d be cool to see Mother, or even things for 64DD like Doshin the Giant or the track editor for F-Zero X, yet the latter two I suppose are very remote possibilities.

I’m a Sin & Punishment freak. I think it’s easily one of the greatest N64 games and a masterpiece of gaming IMO. It’s really tragic it was never released here. Back in the PGC days, NOA was hinting it could be released (both on the record and off) and there was even mentions in Nintendo Power and a U.S. Sin & Punishment website that never went live. Then there’s also the fact it showed up on that survey for VC games that was circulating some time back. It’s only a matter of time, though part of me still thinks it’s too good to be true.

For those who have never played, it’s amazing, albeit short. Still, with all the difficulty levels (with significant changes in things like enemies & boss battles) and high speed modes, it’s still something I come back to play a lot. Every level is completely different and nuttier than the last and the storyline is very much like much anime where you don’t understand the parts until you get the whole picture.

"Taking out the power codes in Kid Icarus says different from this purism you are speaking of"

Why the hell did they do that? I would think removing something from the game for no reason would take more work and thus cost Nintendo more money.

PaleMike Gamin, Contributing EditorFebruary 16, 2007

I'm still trying to figure out if the code removal is more of a side effect than intentional...

One hypothesis is that in order to get the passwords to work, something needed to be changed. Say ever single password in the game needed to be altered a little bit because of some weird issue. Then maybe they just didn't 'fix' the cheat one.

Could it be possible that this ROM happened to be sourced from something that wasn't quite what was put on the final game cart. Cheat codes like that usually get added to aid testers, so it probably was one of the last things to go in.

I dunno, I'm just throwing some incredibly vague ideas out there because the removal makes no sense to me either.

Pfffff, Illusion of Gaia is tripe in comparison...Gotta love having to kill every enemy in an area to progress!

vherubFebruary 16, 2007

I'd pay a couple dollar premium for a localization of a game.
$10 for Tales of Phantasia is no problem. Even Terranigma, ye of little translations, I would pay for.

I'm off to shoot Nin a mesage about this (via Everybody votes)

CalibanFebruary 16, 2007

Terranigma F-T-W-!

KDR_11kFebruary 17, 2007

Hell, I paid 20€ for that on the GBA!
