Wii wins E3 Best of Show and Best Hardware; Nintendo bags five awards in all.

The Game Critics Awards for E3 2006 have just been announced. The awards are voted on by media publications from all over print and the Internet, and are regarded as one of the best to have under a company's belt coming out of E3.

Nintendo was the big winner, taking home five awards, including the coveted Best of Show award with the Wii. The console also took home the best Best Hardware honor.

Two Wii games won awards in other categories. Excite Truck took the top honor in the Best Racing Game category, while WiiSports took the crown for Best Sports game at E3.

Not all of Nintendo's awards went to the Wii and Wii games. The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass for the DS was voted by gaming critics as the winner in the Best Handheld category.

While Nintendo had the most wins as a company, the game that took home the most category wins was Will Wright's Spore for the PC. For the entire list of nominees and winners, check out the Game Critics Awards website.

Wii as Best of Show? Was there really any doubt? That line-up was insane!

I regret not staying in that booth longer, especially after going through that queue. I didn't really play much at all now that I think about it. I think I got claustrophobic and wanted to leave when I did, thinking I'd have time to come back on Day 3. Not so, Day 3 had a much longer line-up, you could spend nearly the whole day in line, and whatever time remained inside the booth before they'd have to kick you out.

Awesome job, Nintendo, even if it doesn't surprise me in the least.

BIG DAMN TRUCK

I bet Phil Harrison is working on his own spin right now. "Well we won best of show a few years back, so Nintendo is copying us. We did everything first."

PUT THAT IN YOUR PIPE AND LIGHT IT UP, PHIL.

Were there any other racing games playable at E3? Just wondering how impressive it was for Excite Truck to win the award. Anyway, great to see Wii win best hardware and best of show, sure shows you that graphics are not everything (even though some Wii games were quite pretty), and that you don't need to have a ton of horsepower to have a truly next generation experience.

Gran Turismo HD was there.

I am a little surprised that Excite Truck beat GT: HD. I guess the series is finally starting to show its age.

GoldenPhoenixMay 31, 2006

Hey I thought the series started showing its age when GT2 came out. face-icon-small-wink.gif

Thats tight........

But for Excite Trucks winning over GT: HD is a pretty big shock for me
I never taught GT: HD would loss, the GT series seemed to be addictive at the time... seems like people are getting over it these days

NinGurl69 *hugglesJune 01, 2006

Consider the cost of playing GT:HD after factoring the PS3 price. Are the shiny cars worth that much?

Phantom Hourglass still looks like trash.

Ian SaneJune 01, 2006

Damn right Nintendo won Best of Show. That was one of their best E3 showings ever.

Great that they won and all, but awards mean nothing if the system under-performs. Didn't the Gamecube also won some awards when it was first revealed? Can anyone clear this up for me?

Forgive me if I am being negative, but one thing is getting praises and critical acclaim from the gaming media, the fans and the developer and the other is mass consumer acceptance. Last I heard, the media doesn't pay Nintendo's rent...

IF 2006 IS A REPEAT OF 2001, Wii WILL GET A LOT OF BUZZ, BUT GEARZ OF WOR WILL UPSTAGE EVERYTHING

goooooooo MATOOR MARKETING

Infernal MonkeyJune 01, 2006

GT: HD was just a HD version of the PS2's GT4 with missing graphical effects. So... yeah. face-icon-small-smile.gif

I think you are talking about how MGS 2 upstaged it or maybe Halo, I don't know which.
If you were talking about MGS 2 it was the must have game for the system since launch and had previously established fans. The hype for this game was insane, Gears of War can't compare. Unfortunately they are making MGS 40353 now, too many sequal too soon.
Halo on the other hand was going to a console with no established big names. Gears of War, no matter how good, will not be considered on par with Halo by most fans. It could be the best game ever but the upcoming Halo 3 will overshadow it because that is THE game for the xbox and the hype machine already started rolling.

On a side not does anyone else here expect PS3 games to have the HD tag sort of like Nintendo in the past had the 64 tag?

I'm liking these game critics awards much better than ign's.

Ugg, back when Nintendo was asking everyone to call it "Nintendo GAMECUBE"

I honestly don't think it is quite right to judge the response GC got with Wii's response when it comes to the awards and perception. I'm sure GC got decent sized lines to play it, but I know it was nothing like Wii's, not to mention the fact that GC was more of a visual treat to look at, while Wii is getting its publicity from gameplay. Also, if I recall correctly (please correct me if I'm wrong) but GC sold quite well when it was first released, but due to a huge dry spell it started dropping off. I think that is probaly one of the biggest contributors to GC's struggle in the gaming market, and it appears Nintendo is setting out to correct that with Wii.

NinGurl69 *hugglesJune 02, 2006

American GC had a drought of games AND available hardware. So while RE Remake and Eternal Darkness passed by without anyone caring, the Halo commercials kept playing, the Xbox units kept shipping, and Mario died.

GoldenPhoenixJune 02, 2006

Forgot about the hardware droughts, then again I hardly pay attention to that stuff if I get a console at launch. The only time I do is if I don't get it at launch, or I'm buying extras to sell on ebay face-icon-small-smile.gif.
