Beyond Good & Evil

by Jeff Shirley - May 16, 2003, 11:56 am EDT

Conspiracy and aliens and quarterstaffs, oh my!

Beyond Good and Evil is about a government conspiracy involving aliens that take over your mind. Yeah, crazy isn't? As Jade you battle these weird aliens that take your friends into their bodies and walk around with your friends in their bellies.

The first things the game makes you fight is a wave of these aliens. You fight them with a staff, which is controlled by the A button. What is strange and cool is that when fighting them, the game slows down abruptly and classical style music started playing. The sound is really cool, except for the overbearing and out of place voice acting. The acting and is very loud and distracting. The contol in this build of Beyond Good and Evil is responsive and I had no problems with it.

Besides the action stages, there is a hovercraft race in which you must finish first to get money. The control here is a little shaky and loose. The water effects look really nice and polished. The framerate holds up well even with many objects on the screen.

Another mode is a stealth section where the object is to take pictures of "evidence" of this conspiracy with the aliens. This is probably the most interesting part of the game, where you yourself must look around the entire level to find what exactly is pertinent for an evidence picture. This idea is great.

Beyond Good and Evil is one to watch for the future.
