Metroid Prime

by Karlie Yeung - July 26, 2002, 4:40 pm EDT

Metroid Prime really has developed into a graphically impressive title with a control system that fits very well.

At the beginning of the level there is a force field that needs to be turned off by shooting each of the switches. Shooting is very easy, the L trigger locks onto targets, moving or stationary and you can blast with the A button as much as you like, the main weapon lasts infinitely. It is not difficult to shoot enemies, the game is very different from an FPS where aiming is imperative. Keeping out of enemy fire by strafing is also easily accomplished if you are locked onto an enemy.

The visor has two modes, combat and scanning. Combat mode is the usual setting while you are battling enemies but once the room is cleared you can bring up scanning mode by tapping left on the D-pad. There will be yellow panels that can be scanned using L and these contain information or can open doors. Once a panel has been scanned the data comes up straight away the next time, initial scanning can take a few seconds. Enemies also can be scanned before or after they are shot down.

It is simple to morph Samus into a ball. This allows her to move through tight passageways and tunnels. It looks a bit strange at first because all the visor information disappears as the view changes to third person. Most of the cut scenes display Samus in third person otherwise the rest of the game is played looking through the visor.

After you are carried into a different part of the ship there’s a room in which in order to unlock the door, you must insert a metallic sphere. Of course, rolling up Samus into her ball form fits the space perfectly.

Metroid was probably the most popular title at the show, and no wonder. It looks and plays incredibly well, it’s the first time I have played a Metroid game and I can’t wait for more.
