Dead Rising: Chop Till You Drop

The dead are rising again.

Dead Rising: Chop Till You Drop is a port of the Xbox 360 horror game. You play reporter Frank West in the game, who has been dropped into a zombie-infested mall to find out how the denizens of the mall turned into zombies. Like old B-grade zombie movies, the game does not take itself seriously, and in that regard is fun to experiment with. Most of the objects in the environments can be picked up and used as weapons, leading to some pretty hilarious moments.

Unfortunately, it seems like the developers haven't taken the port very seriously either, resulting in a downright ugly game. Furthermore, the mass of zombies found in the 360 version has been greatly reduced in the Wii version, in turn reducing any sort of claustrophobic urgency.

On the other hand, the added motion controls do work pretty well, having been adapted from Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition. You must shake the Remote to remove latched-on zombies or swing your weapon. Guns in the game, as you may imagine, are targeted using the Remote pointer. Your gun is reloaded by shaking the Nunchuk, removing the need to take your hand off the trigger.

The demo shown was short, but involved traversing the mall while dispatching zombies. Nearly everything in the mall could be collected and used as a weapon; from baseball bats to shopping carts, umbrellas to toy lightsabers, and even entire park benches. The Wii version has some comical new enemies, such as undead poodles. After a time limit, the player was whisked to the rooftop to battle a zombie clown. Here, the player could strategically shoot a helium air tank to deal damage to the clown or could choose to attack the boss directly.

With its obvious Night of the Living Dead influences, Dead Rising looks like it could be an interesting variation of the sandbox game style, but technical limitations may ultimately limit its appeal.

Talkback

I thought that the obvious influence was from Dawn of the Dead...

I don't think it looks that ugly. The animation seems to be pretty mediocre at times though.

Reports are coming out that the demos at TGC and Nintendo's Media Summit were early builds and that the final version will look and play much better.

That said, don't hold your breath.  ;)
