According to Nikkei.net, Enix and Square have announced their plans to merge in April 2003.  This is the first merger between two major game companies in the history of the industry.  In the face of rising development costs and intense competition, the two companies merged to increase their production capabilities and revenue.  The new company will be called Square Enix, and Square’s Yoichi Wada will become the new president.
