New Details on Metroid Prime 3
« on: August 03, 2005, 08:24:52 PM »
An interview with Prime developer Retro Studios offers a glimpse of what the game and the Revolution hardware might be like.

The Luminoth Temple website is a special invitation-only Nintendo website for registered My Nintendo members with a special interest for the Metroid series.  While not everyone is allowed access to the site, information that comes from it is fair game.

Luminoth Temple members were allowed the opportunity to ask questions of Retro Studios, developers of the first two Metroid Prime games for the GameCube and the upcoming Metroid Prime 3 for Revolution.  The Q&A session revealed some very interesting things about not only Metroid Prime 3, but also possibly the Revolution hardware itself.

First, details on the game. Prime 3's plot is said to be one of "closure," implying that game three will be the last of the Prime series of Metroid titles.  Additionally, the mysterious Phazon material seen in the Prime games will play a "major role" in Prime 3's story, with Samus exploring various environments along the way.

Changes and improvements to the gameplay engine seen between Echoes and the Revolution version of Metroid Prime will likely be even more drastic than the improvements made between the original Metroid Prime and its GameCube sequel.  That doesn't mean the Retro team will dump the first-person view or Samus' Power Suit visor abilities, with the developer commenting there are no plans for using a 3rd-person perspective "for the times when Samus is in a suit."  (Morphball sequences will still use an external camera, however.)

Two familiar names will also be back working on the Revolution version of Metroid Prime.  Andrew Jones, the talented artist behind much of the concept art for the Prime series, is back.  Also returning is Kenji Yamamoto, music composer for the first two games.  With the increased disc capacity that the Revolution's DVD-sized discs will carry, Retro hopes "to take the music into some new  directions."

Although most of the questions asked of Retro were specifically about Metroid Prime 3 the game, only one directly adressed the Revolution hardware and its revolutionary controller.  To the question of whether or not the game would use the controller's unique features, Retro Studios produced this answer:

We plan on taking advantage of a number of new features in the Revolution, including the controller.

What sort of new features does the Revolution have that would benefit a game like Metroid Prime?  The internal flash memory?  Built-in Wi-fi?  It's anyone's guess at this point in time, but at least now there's a little bit of info to chew on while the speculation regarding the Revolution continues.

This pisses me off. I don't blame all of ou guys wanting to know this or share this info, but now because of all this, us members at the [blank] might never get to enjoy this type of early information again. Please PGC, can't you guys at least remove the URL and name of the site from your article? I understand that the info has been leaked and is in the open, but the name of the site doesn't have to be out there and it really is jeapordizing the chances that we'll ever get to enjoy some early information ever again.

I remember getting an e-mail from Nintendo a while ago asking me to join the Luminoth Temple.  I didn't.  Perhaps I should go through my old e-mails and see if I can still join.

EDIT:  I just tried to login using my nintendo.com info and was accepted.  Mature gaming, here I come!
Why must all things be so bright? Why can things not appear only in hues of brown! I am so serious about this! Dull colors are the future! The next generation! I will never accept a world with such bright colors! It is far too childish! I will rage against your cheery palette with my last breath!

You aren't missing much. There are plenty of other too-dark-to-read forums where you're scolded for talking about E-rated games.

You don't do those long, unreadable, boring, blah blah blah posts anymore? Awwwwwwwwwww.

Anyway, MP3 will finish Prime series and hopefully answer some theories that I have conspired in my head. I don't understand what they mean by taking music to a different level but hopefully they won't dissapoint us. As for how the game looks I don't really care because both MP and MP2 were great looking, heh what can you do with such good engineers?!

AKA: Nintendo finally admits that the GameCube's discs were not big enough, and that some of their biggest games were harmed by it.

In unrelated news, Nintendo just recently told us that standard DVD is going to be "sufficent" for the next generation, that we don't need high-definition, that forced Wi-Fi is much "cooler" than including an ethernet jack, and that although the Rev will underpowered in comparison to the competition, we won't be able to notice the difference.

n00b question, did Hip Tanaka retire or something? although Metroid music is awesome, nothing has yet beaten the original 8 bit intro song, he was the one who compose it, right?

Correct, he did all of the music that you find in the original NES Metroid...I'm not sure of when he retired, but I think it was around the SNES sometime...In fact, Earthbound may have been his final project (that I know of)...

Didn't Nintendo say something about their disks being as if dual-layered DVDs? *goes somewhere to check*...Found it. If you go here http://cube.ign.com/articles/522/522559p2.html and then read the second question you will notice that in fact Nintendo said the discs would be dual-layered, subsequentially Nintendo has taken any info on such discs. I don't know if 8GB will be or not be enough, I believe it is enough, however lets us wait until 'The Big N' says something about them. Patience is a virtude!

"Nintendo initially announced that the discs would be dual-layered, offering upward of 8 gigabytes of storage. However, shortly after the announcement, it removed all mention of dual-layered discs from its official Revolution press release."

See, this is the part that is suspicious...

I think what it was is that Perrin Kaplan initially said that Rev games would be on "dual-layered DVD".

Then Nintendo quickly revoked that statement, and said that they would be on "proprietary 12cm discs". Not DVD. And (saying later) that DVD playback would be enabled with an Xbox-remote style add on.

I think Perrin just misspoke. I think that Nintendo is going with a format that's basically DVD-9, but technically not DVD-9, in order to increase security, and to avoid paying anything to the DVD Consortium. The side effect being that they technically aren't allowed to speak those three letters.

Either way, although I was being deliberately negative in my earlier post, I don't see any reason why anyone should be holding their breath for the Rev discs to be anything more than around 10 gigs.

Sorry to bump up such an old post, but what's the deal with the Temple?  I never really went there besides for the one time I managed to find a back door in (and quickly got banned from the forum when I PM'd the mods there to tell them about it - "You're welcome, btw!"), but I went there today to see that it was closed?  How sad.
