Transferring the save data between 3DS and Wii U is really quick. There is an application that you need to download on the 3DS, but after that, you just follow the on screen prompts on the Wii U and 3DS, and you're good to go. It just took a few seconds. Less than 30, if I remember correctly (I did this back in December).

I think the addition of Off-Play is a good thing and something that tons of people and the West seemed to have been clamoring for with this game. For the Japanese, I honestly have no idea. At any rates, it beats the previous Off-TV solution of NEEDING a 3DS and a copy of the game on top of the Wii U version. :-|

Wait... you don't need a copy of the 3DS version? I was under the impression that both had to be bought.

No.  You don't have to have both to play the game.  The only real difference, besides the platform stuff, is that the Wii U version can play online and the 3DS version cannot.

So if I don't buy the 3DS version, I can transfer my Wii U file to my 3DS and play it? That's what I'm asking.

No. Because all the applications lets you do is transfer your save file between the Wii U and 3DS versions of the game. You still need both copies.

Sounds like it. I think Dan was saying that you don't need the 3DS version to play it on the Wii U and do off screen play.  But if you want to play on the 3DS, you have to have a copy of that version.
