Galaxy Nexus does Google video chat over 3G/4G. On a side note, T-Mobile has been testing switching their 1900Mhz band to HSPA, so people with unlocked GSM iPhones might soon (and already do in some areas) get 3G on T-Mobile.

I suppose carriers do take the blame for some restrictions - for instance AT&T will not unlock an iPhone no matter how hard you beg (and no matter what the law says), but Verizon and Sprint will unlock (at least for international use, though many Verizon global phones will work on any US GSM carrier too) any of their global phones (including the 4S) as long as you make at least two payments on your contract and are current on your bills. For shame, AT&T.

I'd assume carriers give Android more leeway because they have greater control over it. I think they're still pretty resentful of Apple for demanding total control of their platform.

Brandogg, unlocking your phone may be legal but phone companies are not required to do it for you. The decision to allow unlocking (and jailbreaking) also said though that unlocking your phone on your own can be considered violating the terms of service of your contract (if your provider has such a provision).

Dur, that's what I was talking about too. Read my post. He complained about AT&T not unlocking phones, and I said that legally they don't have to.

I was of the understanding that they did have to, but unlocking your phone (aside from maybe the iPhone if you jailbreak/unlock) can't violate your ToS since unlocking your phone is supported by the manufacturer, and typically your service provider. Typically if you're on good terms with your provider you just call them up and say, "I need my phone SIM unlocked," and then they say "here's the code and how you need to use it."

But back to the main point...iPad sucks.

The decision to make jailbreaking and unlocking legal made sure to point out that the phone providers were not required to do it for you, and that it CAN violate the ToS. All the decision did was say that you are not breaking the law if you do it yourself.

I like the iPad, not perfect but its good (I have the original).

Unlocking has always been legal in the US (or at least since smart phones came around), the DMCA was just revised to specifically say it's legal in 2006 and then in 2009. It seems that unlocking your phone really only might be a problem if you use AT&T (and for some reason you tell one of their lawyers that you unlocked your phone). Verizon will unlock your phone after 60 days (only one per customer every 180 days though), I believe Sprint has the same policy, and T-Mobile will unlock you phone after 40 days of service, and you can get another unlocked in 90 days. AT&T will consider it after you fulfill your contract, but they will never unlock and iPhone (even though the #1 and #3 carriers in the US will).

I think you are right on it always being legal for the providers to unlock it, the DMCA clarified it to say that users are allowed to do it on their own.

Jailbreaking and unlocking are two separate things. On the iPhone you have to Jailbreak to Unlock. Jailbreaking is about running unsanctioned software on an Apple device. Unlocking is all about the carriers and their SIM cards. Stop using the term interchangeably.

Technically you don't *have* to jailbreak the iPhone to unlock it. Apple will sell unlocked iPhones at their stores and they can actually unlock any iPhone that they want to, they just basically don't do it. You can also use a Gevey SIM to unlock an iPhone 4 (as long as it had 4.10.01 baseband or lower) or a 4S (GSM-provisioned only).

I've read that there isn't a big difference between the two, even with the display. You aren't going to notice the difference in power or display unless you run enormous games or put the screen an inch away from your face.

There are also some really nice Android tablets to be found. Take a look here: http://www.androidauthority.com/best-android-tablets-2012-49160/

Almost all of them have more power/ram/battery life and better cameras. Most of them also have HDMI outs and USB/SD Card ins. They're also universally cheaper.

But if you've been with Apple, it's probably best to stick with them.

I've read that performance wise, the new iPad is basically on par with the iPad 2. All of the upgrades to the processor, battery etc. are there mostly because the screen demands greater resources. For example, battery life is more or less unchanged because a larger battery was employed to match the screen's greater needs. I went to Best Buy the other day to check out the screen and it does look pretty fantastic, much better than the iPad 2. Not good enough to buy one, mind you, but if I were to get one, that new screen would be hard to pass up.

If you are just looking for a WiFi on the go tablet, then I would get a Nook Tablet or Kindle Fire. They are both cheap, and actually quite powerful machines if you ever want to play some games.

Hey, AT&T has finally started unlocking iPhones (through Apple)...but only if you've either fulfilled your entire contract, bought the phone at full retail, or paid an ETF...and are under contract still...and have purchased another phone from AT&T. So...that $49 3GS you got 2 years ago can finally be unlocked...if you have another phone from them...and are still a customer. One day they'll figure it out. Don't worry, if you bought a used one...they'll look up the IMEI and makes sure the person who originally bought it completed their contract...and make sure that you are an AT&T customer.

That's more of an OR situation. Yeah, you have to have an account in good standing, but you can get it unlocked if you're out of contract OR upgraded to a new phone OR payed for an ETF. From my understanding you don't need to have bought another AT&T phone.

You would have had to have upgraded your phone *and* completed your contract - as in, early upgrade (plus $100 fee), and still finish the remainder of the contract. I can't really speak from an AT&T customer point of view though, I've had Verizon for over 12 years, and honestly other than for getting an iPhone before everyone else (in the US at least), I can't think of any good reason that anyone would sign up with AT&T. Most dropped calls, worst rated customer service, crazy high prices...

From what I read, I thought it was completing your contract by either running out the two years or paying the ETF while still being a paying customer. Alternatively, you can be in a contract as long as the phone itself wasn't associated with said contract.

Here is what AT&T basically says are the requirements:

a customer’s account must be in good standing, their device cannot be associated with a current and active term commitment on an AT&T customer account, and they need to have fulfilled their contract term, upgraded under one of our upgrade policies or paid an early termination fee.
