Yeah I suppose you're right on both points indeed. I should've said instead that I understand why people would choose to no longer frequent GAF; and I think I'll quit lurking there as well. But you're right, that's a decision everyone should make for themselves.

I don't understand the coworker stuff or Carol. Carol can be complained about to the boss and HR. We're talking about THE BOSS and owner of a major, once-influential (and a week ago it was just that) message board and how this incident was the straw that broke the camel's back. The owner has a history of bad things regarding what he's done, how poorly he's handled them, and how's he run the site, and they relate to how the site is looked at. The community had enough and is moving on to a new site, which I hope will do well and is moderated better (but with a similar level of strictness -- but not rampant bans for those going against the grain). I'm waiting for it -- not to join but to lurk just like I did on NeoGAF. Lurking on GAF now that it's back up, it's a sad thing to see the quality of remaining users there who suddenly "just want to talk about games, man" as if politics doesn't permeate in gaming or practically every part of their/our lives. Unfortunately, as someone used the word, "shitheads" are pretty much the only ones left on GAF now. The type that **** down a topic about helping those who were affected by the Mental Health community being deleted in the now-purged Off-Topic section, telling people who were affected to "go somewhere else" and other things showing lack of empathy. That's the welcoming and understanding community I lurked, for sure. /Not

Jokes aside, the problem with complaining to a boss is whether they can look at a situation objectively. If the boss likes the person/people you’re complaining about or it’s more trouble to address the issue, you’re SOL. The problem with complaining to HR is that they’re not here to back you, they’re here to back the company. Unless it’s a cut and dry situation (and even if it is in some circumstances and depending on the company), complaining makes you look like a problem employee. If it’s better for the company to side against or cut ties with you than the person you complained about, you’re SOL too.

That’s a separate issue than what’s going on at NeoGaf; I just used it to make my Carol joke (I don’t know even a Carol). I used to lurk NeoGAF for news and rumors. I just can’t bring myself to go there anymore.

It's a new site created by the community, but it's not live yet.
Almost went up yesterday, but 4chan apparently had a mole trying to sabotage from within, so it got delayed.

Not sure how many insiders with actual knowledge will make the migration though. GAF was a pretty polarizing place for some I mostly used it as my news and rumours aggregator occasionally joining in on some topics where I saw fit.

But GAF will likely never be anything like what it was prior to this mess.

Candidly, the internet fan community for gaming at large is horrible.  I'm not sure what exactly about it breeds more toxicity, but I browse different forums and subreddits based on interests (movies, tv, sports), and gaming is by far the worst outside of political discussion in terms of attacking others and being dismissive about people speaking up towards misconduct or abuse, unless it's about lootboxes or microtransactions.


I've largely drawn down my post count anywhere but here largely because I get disgusted at the community writ large, and while I don't know any of you personally, I've been here long enough to where most of you have been decent to me and even if disagreeing, having respectful discussion over topics.  You all might be horrible people in real life, but maybe for the regulars of the form it's a familiar enough space and there's a lot of dedication to at least keep a core community that I don't remember any real rabble-rousing since TJ Spyke's ouster.
