Control your team of wind-up toy Pokémon in this brand new adventure!

The illustrious Pokémon franchise is making its retail debut on the Nintendo 3DS in the form of Super Pokémon Scramble. Scramble is a battle strategy game developed by Ambrella, the same team that brought us WiiWare's Pokémon Rumble, known as Melee! Pokemon Scramble in Japan. The game bears many similarities to Rumble, and the 3DS adds a few enhancements to the game modes.

The collection line-up has been visually enhanced

Players, now represented by their Mii, take control of the same wind-up toy Pokémon featured in the previous game. This time, all of the Pokémon that have appeared in the series until now, including those from the Black and White series will be included. Yes, with time and luck it is possible to catch every single one. Turning a mysterious key on their back will allow the toys to interact in a simulated toy Pokémon world.

Look at Mii wind it up

Your starting toy strolls about through various stages seeking to befriend the strongest Pokémon it can find by encountering and battling enemy toys that will approach and attack. It's a simple action game, each Pokémon can have two attacks, one assigned to each of the action buttons and you can run up to an enemy and fight them. The stages are played overhead, and at the end of each area your party is confronted by a large boss toy Pokémon, which is usually a larger form of a legendary Pokémon, though sometimes it can just be an evolved form of an already encountered Pokémon. 

As you defeat enemy Poké-toys, they will sometimes be dropped as new wind-up toys that then become available for your use. You control one toy at a time, and any new toys you collect can be swapped out for the one you are using. This can help to give you a type advantage, or let you switch for a toy that has more health remaining. The the world is divided into areas, and at the end of each area your party is confronted by a large boss toy Pokémon, which may also choose to become an ally if defeated.

Defeated enemy toys will also drop "P" currency, the money of this toy-world and while the official website so far only says that it will be useful to collect lots of it, it is very likely that the money will be used for lotteries for new moves and new Pokémon as in Rumble.


There are two additional play modes, Battle Royale is an every toy for themselves brawl which has you competing against an onslaught of enemies. As Pokémon fall they are replaced by new enemies until eventually the last Pokémon standing is crowned the winner. In Rumble, the Battle Royale had to be defeated before you could move up to the next rank.

A clash if I've ever seen one

Clash Battle, new to the series, features armies consisting of 10 Pokémon competing in a grand-scale VS battle. It is a gigantic brawl with a huge amount of Pokémon on screen at the same time.

Super Pokémon Scramble will support two-player wireless play, where you and a friend can play cooperatively to clear the game's areas. While playing with a friend, the defeated Pokémon are more likely to turn into toy drops, allowing you quickly build teams of allies. StreetPass will also be implemented, letting your Pokémon team battle against others and the game will feature the Miis you gain from StreetPass.

Do you still treat pokemon like loot drops in this game, i.e. try to grab the best drops with special attributes while discarding old ones that are no longer useful?

Exactly. It looks to be the same game, but with this extra Clash Battle mode and some 3DS enhancements.

So no online play then? I tried out the demo of the WiiWare version of this game, and it was pretty fun despite its simplicity. But it felt like the kind of game to play in co-op, and no one I know would be interested in playing this. So if this had an online mode for co-op, I'd be tempted.

That's exactly how I feel about it.  It's a lot of fun, but is really designed to be played co-op...
Just some random guy on the internet who has a different opinion of games than you.

Some of the pokemon look bad. Like the art style
If I had a dollar for ever time I have heard that. Because a dollar is worth more than a nickle.
